Prior to the tournament there was talk of the big bonuses that the Russian teams would get for winning the Olympiad and the fact they haven't won since 2002. The Russian first team lost to Hungary and their second team lost to Armenia.

Russia have made it a priority to win the Olympiad but today both their first and second teams had major setbacks losing 2.5-1.5 against Hungary and Armenia respectively. Alexander Grishuk lost to Peter Leko with the black pieces. He was gradually ground down in an ending. Arman Pashikian was defending champion's Armenia's hero when he beat Artyom Timofeev on board 4.
Georgia beat Vietnam 3.5-0.5 to take the lead. Georgia (10pts) now face Armenia (10pts) whilst Ukraine (9pts) play Hungary (10pts).

Nigel Short won impressively with white against Laurent Fressinet but David Howell fell to Sebasten Feller so the match finished 2-2.

Of the big beasts in the tournament Magnus Carlsen returned with a crushing win against Francisco Vallejo Pons in Norway's 2-2 draw with Spain. Hikaru Nakamura and Gata Kamsky were both winners against Argentina in the USA's 3-1 win. Boris Gelfand drew against Dmitry Jakovenko in Israel's 1.5-2.5 loss to Russia 3. Veselin Topalov also drew in his teams 1-3 loss to India.
