The first round of the European Team Championship that started in Porto Carras in Greece on Thursday 3rd November saw many close struggles. Russia squeaked past Moldova in a strange match. Mamedyarov was Azerbaijan's only winner in beating Italy. Ukraine and Armenia were 3.5-0.5 winners. Rd2 Pairs: 1pm Fri: CZE-RUS, UKR-BUL, ARM-AZE, CRO-HUN, ENG-GRE, GER-ISR, SRB-ESP.

The rating favourites Russia somehow got past Moldova in a match that certainly should have been drawn and that they could easily have lost. Peter Svidler struggled for most of the game with white against Viktor Bologan who offered a draw in a position where he was substantially better. Alexander Morozevich beat Dmitry Svetushkin after the latter just dropped a rook on move 77 in a drawn position. Azerbaijan too only won narrowly, against Italy with their "enforcer" Shakhriyar Mamedyarov winning quickly against Sabino Brunello.

There were big 3.5-0.5 wins for Armenia over Austria (Interview with birthday boy Sergei Movsesian who drew easily with black against Ragger) and Ukraine over Slovenia where veteran Alexander Beliavsky held Vassily Ivanchuk.

Veselin Topalov even with an aggressive novelty couldn't get past Yannick Pelletier, the great Viktor Korchnoi drew against Ivan Cheparinov and it was left to Kiril Georgiev who beat Olivier Kurmann to see Bulgaria past Switzerland 2.5-1.5.

Hungary beat Denmark, Sweden held France as did Finland with the Netherlands.

England's stars Michael Adams and Nigel Short came good in their match against Latvia where David Howell lost to Arturs Neiksans.

Serbia and Greece were the early leaders after being drawn against bottom seeds Luxembourg and Cyprus and beating them 4-0. These two teams are well adrift of the rest in terms of playing strength and are in for a very tough time indeed.

The Official website ChessDom have many, many videos of the event. A couple of early ones:
