Russia were very convincing in their defeat of the Czech Republic 3.5-0.5 with wins for Svidler, Grischuk and Nepomniachtchi. Hosts Greece beat England with fine wins for Mastrovasilis over Short and Papaioannou over Howell. Romania went top after beating Turkey. The match of the day was Azerbaijan's victory over Armenia where political tensions are always reflected in nervous play. Round 3 Pairings: GRE-AZE, ROU-ESP, RUS-NED, CRO-UKR, HUN-GER, ISR-FRA, BUL-POL, ENG-ARM.

Russia demolished the Czech Republic with an easy 3.5-0.5 win. Peter Svidler got the better of the black side of a Gruenfeld Defence where he firstly misplaced and then won David Navara's dark squared bishop. Alexander Grischuk took Viktor Laznicka into a classic King and Pawn Ending that at the very least is very tricky to hold or as in this case soon totally winning for him. Hracek-Karjakin was drawn. Ian Nepomniachtchi just had too much tactically for his opponent Jiri Stocek.

The match between Ukraine and Bulgaria was a much tighter affair drawn 2-2. Veselin Topalov played an old variation of the Queen's Gambit Declined first played by Ulf Andersson against Vassily Ivanchuk. A complicated queenless middlegame was suddenly agreed drawn after Topalov grabbed a pawn. Ivan Cheparinov quick draw against Ruslan Ponomariov. Kiril Georgiev got nothing against Zahar Efimenko drawn 38. Finally Alexander Moiseenko couldn't make anything of an extra pawn against Aleksandar Delchev.

Levon Aronian against Sergei Movsesian

Azerbaijan beat 3-1 Armenia in this always tense match. Levon Aronian ( Interviewed after the game) said that neither he nor his opponent Radjabov were familiar with the variation of the Queen's Gambit they entered even though he had looked at it before ("My memory was failing me".). After 13...Bd7 he realised he didn't have the advantage and liquidated to a draw. Vugar Gashimov won a nervy struggle against Sergei Movsesian where he certainly had the easier position to play. Akopian-Mamedyarov was a relatively short draw. Gadir Guseinov was completely winning after 17 moves but it took him a very long time to convert.

Croatia against Hungary saw four not terribly interesting draws.

Michael Adams and Nigel Short

Hosts Greece were significantly out-rated on every board against England but handed out a 2.5-1.5 defeat and moved second. Michael Adams couldn't make anything of a favourable position against Hristos Banikas. Nigel Short rather got thumped by Dimitrios Mastrovasilis who got a very favourable Caro-Kann and then found a lovely snap mate to finish things off. David Howell was really rather outplayed in a heavy piece endgame by Ioannis Papaioannou having never been better with white. Gawain Jones gradually outplayed Stelios Halkias with black.
