The European Club Cup has just passed the half way stage, top seeds Alkaloid are still well placed to win the title. World Champion Magnus Carlsen's number one status is under threat at the tournament. He has lost 2.5 points so far, he's less than a handful of points ahead of his World Championship challenger Fabiano Caruana. This probably will be the main point of interest for the remainder of the tournament. Although for all practical purposes we can already say that they're are equally rated and clearly closely matched making the match next month a fascinating prospect.

The Chess.com Speed Chess Championship takes place July 24th to December 2nd 2018. 16 players in a knockout online blitz tournament. 90 minutes of 5/1 blitz, 60 minutes of 3/1 blitz, and 30 minutes of 1/1 bullet chess. Players: Fabiano Caruana, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Hikaru Nakamura, Wesley So, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Wei Yi, Anish Giri, Alexander Grischuk, Sergey Karjakin, Hou Yifan, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Vidit Gujrath were all invited. There was an invitational qualifier on June 26th-27th where Leinier Dominguez Perez defeated Jon Ludvig Hammer in the final (Georg Meier and Eric Hansen lost to these in the semi-finals).
