1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Yuri Vovk, Dennis Monokroussos, Henri Koskinen, Vladimir Kukaev and everyone else who helped with this issue.

The Olympiad is wide open with Azerbaijan, Poland and top seeds the USA tied on 13 points with four rounds to go. China and India are just about in touch but second seeds Russia seem out of it. Armenia lead the women's event ahead of China, Ukraine and the host Georgia's first team, again Russia (the top seeds) seem out of it. Once again the game coverage is going very smoothly and there have been very few problems. This is not an easy event to do well but the last few Olympiads the FIDE team has used their experience to get things right. It's worth mentioning because I remember all the years before that where it wasn't done well and I appreciate the difference and it's easy to take such things for granted. Lots of good chess to look at.

The Chess.com Speed Chess Championship takes place July 24th to October 18th 2018. 16 players in a knockout online blitz tournament. 90 minutes of 5/1 blitz, 60 minutes of 3/1 blitz, and 30 minutes of 1/1 bullet chess. Players: Fabiano Caruana, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Hikaru Nakamura, Wesley So, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Wei Yi, Anish Giri, Alexander Grischuk, Sergey Karjakin, Hou Yifan, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Vidit Gujrath were all invited. There was an invitational qualifier on June 26th-27th where Leinier Dominguez Perez defeated Jon Ludvig Hammer in the final (Georg Meier and Eric Hansen lost to these in the semi-finals). The final place will be decided in a 10 round open qualifier on Tuesday, July 10th.

Games from the invitational qualifier available. It seems defending champion Magnus Carlsen is avoiding rapid and blitz ahead of his World Championship match in November.
