1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, David Navara, Rich Fireman, Roland Wimmer, Frank Braig, Patrick Bensch, Norbert Schumacher, Sriram Malladi and everyone else who helped with this issue.

Fabiano Caruana repeated his success at the Candidates by winning the GRENKE Chess Classic. Caruana scored a point more than the World Champion Magnus Carlsen who was very dissatisfied with his play. Carlsen and Caruana both have lots of chess coming up. Next for Caruana is the US Championship and for Carlsen it is the Gashimov Memorial in Shamkir. Carlsen in particular will want to start showing something his best form as Caruana has laid down a challenge.

2) GRENKE Chess Classic 2018

The GRENKE Chess Classic took place Saturday 31st March to 9th April 2018. Magnus Carlsen and his challenger Fabiano Caruana met in the first round and headed a very strong 10 player field that included Aronian, Anand, MVL and Vitiugov. Caruana followed his win in London in December and the Candidates in Berlin with another tournament victory. He secured it by defeating Nikita Vitiugov who had his own ambitions to win the tournament. Magnus Carlsen tried the Sicilian as black against Viswanathan Anand but never looked like getting any chances to win and instead had to be careful.

23) PRO Chess League 2018

The PRO Chess League was a rapid chess tournament that took place on the chess.com website 18th January to 8th April 2018. 32 city based teams from throughout the world start in four groups. Play day is generally Wednesday. St. Louis, Chengdu, Armenia and Ljubljana all qualified for the final four in San Francisco 7th-8th April. Time control 15 minutes plus 2 seconds a move. Leading players: Magnus Carlsen, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, etc. In a thriling finale the Armenian Eagles beat the Chengdu Pandas in the final but only after three tie-break games. The Saint Louis Archbishops were 3rd and the Ljubljana Turtles 4th. Games from the final weekend to follow.
