World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand retains his lead over Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian as hardly any of the players in the top 10 played any games. Vugar Gashimov enters the top 10 in the world through some old Bundesliga results that have only just been submitted. The lack of top level games reflects the crunch in the finances at the top level and the fact that many are preparing for the World Chess Championship Candidates which start next week.

There was very little change at the top of the rating list due to the lack of elite chess in this period. The most important event was the Amber Rapidplay which obviously wasn't rated.

Events that were covered were the European Individual Championships and the Russian Teams. Perhaps most important however was that the whole year of the Bundesliga results for 2010-11 were submitted (even though on this day it turns out that contrary to all expections the season hadn't actually finished and there was a final relegation match to be played).

The financial troubles meant that even though many top 10 players have clubs they didn't actually play.

Gashimov moved into the top 10 due to his Bundesliga performance, Ponomariov also went above the former number 10 Alexander Grischuk (who had no games) through the Russian Team Championship performances.

Arkadij Naiditsch moved from 52 to 27, he lost points in Aix-les-Bains but his huge Bundesliga and recent Neckar Open ended up with him gaining 31.5 points.

Vladimir Potkin gained 29 points, mostly from winning in Aix-les-Bains.

Judit Polgar climbed 10 places as she returns to full time play. She obviously is still women's number one way ahead of Humpy Koneru, but it is young women's world champion Hou Yifan that looks more likely to have the long term chances to overtake her and she is also the top 14 junior of either sex.

A rating of 2648 was required to be in the top 100.
