Anish Giri repeated his 4/5 from the first day to lead the Magnus Carlsen Invitational Preliminary section after two of the three days. His 8/10 practically guarantees progression to the second phase but there are advantages in the final knockout phase to winning this first section and that will be his final day target, Carlsen certainly made it clear it was his. Giri beat David Anton, Levon Aronian, drew with Nils Grandelius and Daniil Dubov and finished by beating Shakhriyar Mamedyarov who scored a nightmare 1/5 and is practically out of the running. Magnus Carlsen (wins vs Mamedyarov, Nepomniachtchi and Karjakin although he claimed "were kind of gifts" from his opponents) and Wesley So (wins vs Aronian, Daniil Dubov and Jorden Van Foreest) also scored 4/5 and are in fine shape to progress. Sergey Karjakin making his debut had a much better second day scored 3.5/5 - Alireza Firouzja and Hikaru Nakamura who is undefeated. The final day should be very exciting with only 8 of the 16 players going through to the KO stage. It looks to me that 7 players are chasing just 4 places if we take it the top 4 in the standings are pretty much there.

Round 10 Standings: 1st Giri 8pts, 2nd Carlsen 7.5pts, 3rd-4th So, Nakamura 6.5pts, 5th-6th Firouzja, MVL 6pts, 7th-9th Aronian, Dubov, Karjakin 5pts, 10th-11th Nepomniachtchi, Radjabov 4.5pts, 12th-13th Mamedyarov, Grandelius 4pts, 14th Van Foreest 3pts, 15th Anton Guijarro 2.5pts, 16th Pichot 2pts.

Final day starts at 4pm GMT Monday 15th March.
