Magnus Carlsen beat Alireza Firouzja in their second round match of the Magnus Carlsen Invitational. Carlsen admitted afterwards he was out for blood following his loss to Firouzja in the Banter Blitz final. Carlsen did win the match 2.5-1.5 but said he wanted to finish the match today as soon as possible, in three games, but had to settle for victory in four after blundering into mate in the second game. Apart from the blunder in game two this felt like a more impressive performance from the World Champion than against Hikaru Nakamura in Round 1.
Nakamura too was back in action today and he beat Anish Giri 2.5-1.5. Giri's poor form continued with a poor loss in game one and a rather strange blunder in game two which allowed a very drawish position just when it looked like he should be pressing. Giri did play at little better in this second round match and will hope to get on the scoreboard next.
Round 2 Day 2 21st April 3pm BST: Nepomniachtchi-MVL and Ding-Caruana.
