Fabiano Caruana's debut on the Meltwater Champions Chess tour has started with victory in the Preliminary section of the FTX Crypto Cup. Caruana hasn't played any online chess this year just the Tata Steel tournament as a warm up to the Candidates but here he scored 10/15 just losing one game - against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Having played no events on the tour so far and with only three left after this Caruana will probably have to win this event to reach the tour finals.

The whole event was fairly tight but Anish Giri, Hikaru Nakamura, MVL and Wesley So had relatively pain free qualifications along with Teimour Radjabov who didn't have a good day but also had a bit of leeway with his good score at the end of day 2.

It really came down to who was going to get the remaining two places and there was a fierce fight for those. Magnus Carlsen had a tough final day draw and admitted his loss to Levon Aronian in the final round of day 2 left him struggling throughout day 3 with nerves. Carlsen managed to draw his first four games, he was certainly worse against Peter Svidler but with Levon Aronian facing bottom placed Alan Pichot (who lost all his games on the final day) Carlsen knew only a win against Radjabov would likely be good enough. Carlsen was better against Radjabov, but kept allowing his opponent back into the game and the Queen and Pawn endgame they had was drawish but Radjabov traded into a lost pawn endgame and Carlsen was through. Ian Nepomniachtchi also knew that only a final round win would be good enough, he gave up an exchange for nebulous chances against Alexander Grischuk and somehow later also emerged with a win and so it was Aronian who finally missed out on the second phase.

Final Standings: 1st Caruana 10pts, 2nd Giri 9pts, 3rd Nakamura 9pts, 4th MVL 9pts, 5th So 9pts, 6th Carlsen 8.5pts, 7th Radjabov 8.5pts, 8th Nepomniachtchi 8pts, 9th Aronian 8pts, 10th Mamedyarov 7.5pts, 11th Firouzja 7pts, 12th Svidler 7pts, 13th Ding 7pts, 14th Dubov 6pts, 15th Grischuk 5pts, 16th Pichot 1.5pts.

Quarterfinal pairings Wed 26th May: Caruana-Nepomniachtchi, So-MVL, Nakamura-Carlsen and Radjabov-Giri.
