15 matches go to playoffs, Wei Yi beats Shirov, Aronian, Kramnik, Kamsky and Mamedyarov to playoffs, Peter Leko out in the second round of FIDE World Cup in Tromso.

14 year old Wei Yi made the lead headlines for the second round running by defeating veteran Alexei Shirov to set up a third round match with either Maxim Matlakov or 9th seed Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Wei Yi is already a full time professional and according to fellow countryman Wang Hao playing to 2700 at least. Today he won a complex ending with little apparent trouble where he showed his three pawns were better than Shirov's piece to go through.

Top seed Levon Aronian demonstrated some wonderful ideas that didn't quite work (he was trying to show 9...cxd4 wasn't quite right) and once those didn't work he felt after 14.a3 he was already worse. Later Aronian got a small advantage in the rook but just couldn't turn that into anything significant. So Aronian has to go to the play-offs on Friday as does Vladimir Kramnik who tried a lot of ideas against Mikhail Kobalia but couldn't get an error out of him. Gata Kamsky lost a terrible game full of blunders from both sides against Alexandr Shimanov and will have to play-off tomorrow.

Peter Leko admitted to playing badly in all the World Cups he had competed in and that in going out to Julio Granda Zuniga he had "Yesterday I made a mistake on move 11 today I made a mistake on move 10. After Qc2 white cannot equalise, first you have to play Bd3." Alexander Morozevich went through to a match against Nikita Vitiugov playing the King's Indian because he claimed with dry humour he had no idea how to play just for a draw.

There are very few settled Round 3 pairings, they are Morozevich-Vitiugov, Granda Zuniga-Giri, Dominguez-Vachier-Lagrave and Nakamura against birthday boy (21) Baskaran Adhiban. Vassily Ivanchuk, Alexander Areshenko, Boris Gelfand (winner today against Anton Filippov), Fabiano Caruana, Dmitry Andreikin, Pavel Eljanov (grinding down Dmitry Jakovenko in the final game to finish), Alexander Grischuk, Wei Yi and Evgeny Tomashevsky are the others through, everyone else in play-offs tomorrow. 15 of the 32 matches continue on Friday.
