Fabiano Caruana defeated Alexander Grischuk in the final round of the FIDE Candidates tournament to win the event by a point. Caruana didn't need the help of anyone else as he impressively defeated his Russian opponent in the final round. However the games prior to the first time control were extremely tense and the winner was in doubt for a long time.

As it was Caruana's rivals all drew. Sergey Karjakin looked to be the one pressing against Ding Liren but a quick turn around in fortunes left him having to be careful to draw. Vladimir Kramnik sacrificed a pawn against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov leading to a sharp middlegame. Mamedyarov survived the pressure but never got any real winning chances. Levon Aronian and Wesley So were out of contention and drew their game as fast as decently possible.

Final Standings: 1st Caruana 9pts, 2nd Mamedyarov 8pts, 3rd Karjakin 8pts, 4th Ding Liren 7.5pts, 5th Kramnik 6.5pts, 6th Grischuk 6.5pts, 7th Wesley So 6pts, 8th Aronian 4.5pts
