FIDE Candidates 2016 (9)

Anand beats Aronian to join Karjakin in the lead after Candidates Round 9

Viswanathan Anand was the only winner of the day after defeating Levon Aronian in a Giuoco Piano. Anand got a small edge which he eventually turned into a winning endgame, although Aronian seemed likely to save it around first time control he drifted into trouble again shortly afterwards.

Joint leader Sergey Karjakin drew with black against Hikaru Nakamura in a Queen's Indian where his 19...Rd8 surprised his opponent and soon afterwards he was at least equal and although both sides obtained passed pawns a draw was the correct result.

Anish Giri seemed on course to win his first game of the event when he got a huge advantage against Fabiano Caruana's very risky opening as black but in the end he had to settle for another draw. 24.Ke1 required a small amount of calculation but led to a completely winning position. Instead 24.Rd4 made white's life a bit harder. Giri pressed on for 96 moves and no doubt had winning chances nearly throughout but his best chance had gone.

Peter Svidler got into terrible trouble out of the opening against Veselin Topalov (17...d5 maybe was not great but he was under pressure even by this stage). 32.Be2 seems to win for white. By 37.Bg4 the game was equal and although perhaps Svidler didn't play the very best he held the draw in 47 moves.

Round 9 Standings: Karjakin, Anand 5.5pts, Caruana, Aronian 5pts, Giri 4.5pts, Svidler 4pts, Nakamura 3.5pts, Topalov 3pts
