Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting 2013 (4)

Kramnik joins Adams in Dortmund lead after Round 4.

Vladimir Kramnik beat Georg Meier on the black side of a Catalan where he quickly got an edge which he brough home for a full point. Michael Adams was posed no problems at all by Peter Leko on the black side of a Queen's Gambit Exchange Variation and the game finished in perpetual check on move 27. Kramnik and Adams lead on 3/4.

Wang Hao beat Fabiano Caruana to inflict the second defeat in a rown on the tournament favourite. Caruana just ended up with a passive position without counterplay and eventually couldn't meet all of Wang's threats. All this from a quiet English/Reti which shouldn't have been too difficult to meet.

Dmitry Andreikin had a fine Tal Memorial but this event is turning out to be a nightmare as he lost his third game, this time as black against Arkadij Naiditsch. In a strange variation of the Ruy Lopez the players were nevertheless following theory until move 14. Black's exposed king looked like a problem and even with queens off it eventually came under attack and Naiditsch converted the resulting ending.

Khenkin and Fridman drew a tricky open Catalan.

Round 4 Standings: Kramnik, Adams 3pts, Wang Hao 2.5pts, Khenkin, Leko , Meier, Naiditsch 2pts, Fridman, Caruana 1.5pts, Andreikin 0.5pts.

Round 5 Pairings 30 July 2013: Kramnik-Leko, Caruana-Naiditsch, Adams-Wang Hao, Andreikin-Khenkin, Fridman-Meier.
