Viswanathan Anand was the latest player to defeat out of form Veselin Topalov in the fifth round of the London Chess Classic. He returns to 50%. In spite of leading the Grand Tour standings going into this final event Topalov's poor start has ruled him out of contention for first place.

There were three Berlin Defences in the round. Fabiano Caruana got a small advantage out of the opening against Alexander Grischuk but it didn't seem to promise many winning chances but he did make progress in time trouble and did miss at least one clear win with 46.Qg6 before allowing Grischuk to escape with a draw.

Anish Giri produced an improvement in a known line of the Berlin Adams-Kramnik from last year with 19...Nd4 and obtained a quick draw against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

Michael Adams made an interesting thrust with his h-pawn against Hikaru Nakamura but lost the pawn on h6. In spite of that Adams had enough to draw.

Levon Aronian and Magnus Carlsen draw in 40 moves
