Ding Liren beat Sergey Karjakin to catch Fabiano Caruana in the lead on 3.5 points after five rounds of the Tata Steel Masters. The event moved to the Science Center NEMO in Amsterdam for the day. Ding came out on top of a very difficult Queen's Indian requiring a lot of precise calculation.

World Champion Magnus Carlsen beat Loek van Wely but only after a lot of risk in the Dutchman's time trouble. 23...Qg5 sacrificed a piece (23...Nf6 was sounder) 25.Ke1! (25.Rc2) was an excellent response, 27...Rxg2? (27...g5 necessary) was a mistake according to the computers with a precise sequence following 29.Qh4+ leading to a win. Carlsen's 36...Kg8 hoped precisely for the losing 37.Ne2 as played although by then Carlsen was well on top. Carlsen moves to a group half a point off the lead on 3pts.

Leader Fabiano Caruana was held by Hou Yifan in a technical struggle.

Michael Adams went down to yet another defeat, this time to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. 34...Ra6? turned a favourable position for Adams to a worse one although later 43.Rce2?! Rxe2! was dead even according to computers. Adams position collapsed quickly after that.

The remaining games Tomashevsky-Eljanov, Wei Yi-Giri and Navara-So were all drawn without any great drama.

The B-Group took place on Wednesday. Leader Aleksey Dreev conceded a quick draw to Jorden van Foreest and was joined on 4.5/5 by Baskaran Adhiban.

Round 5 standings: 1st-2nd Caruana, Ding 3.5pts 3rd-6th Hou Yifan, Wesley So, Carlsen, Eljanov 3pts, 7th-9th Karjakinm, Wei Yi, Mamedyarov 2.5pts, 10th-12th Giri, Tomashevsky, Navara 2pts 13th Van Wely 1.5pts 14th Adams 1pt
