Danielian draws first game but still leads on 5.5/6

Elina Danielian held a draw against Lilit Mkrtchian with the black pieces easily enough but that did bring an end to her winning run. In second place are Pia Cramling who beat Antoaneta Stefanova and Marie Sebag who beat Martha Fierro Baquero. Humpy Koneru's slim chances of getting the tournament win she needs to qualify for a World Title Match later in the year stayed alive when she beat Maia Chiburdanidze. She will have to beat Danielian with the white pieces in Round 8 and pick up the pace against the rest of the field too. The official site has lots of pictures from the rest day. Everyone seems to be having fun.

Leader Elina Danielian's winning run was finally stopped by Lilit Mkrtchian. But only to the extent that she drew extremely comfortably with the black pieces. She now has 5.5/6 a point and a half clear of the field.

If there is to be any real tension in the conclusion to the tournament it will be if Humpy Koneru gets in a position to challenge for the first place she needs to qualify for a World Title match later in the year. She will have to beat Danielian to do this but today she need to beat former World Champion Maia Chiburdanidze just to stay within any kind of touch.

Chiburdanidze's previous move had been 18...Rab8 and surely the idea was to play either 19...a6 followed by Ne7 or 19...Ne7 instead she uncorked the awful 19...e5 which just didn't work at all and 20...e4 made her position worse. She must have miscalculated somewhere. After this Koneru brought home the point relatively easily.

Marie Sebag more than equalised directly out of the opening, the black side of a Caro-Kann, against Martha Fierro Baquero and then gradually outplayed her for a nice win. Sebag is now in joint second place with 4/6 a point and a half behind the leader.

Pia Cramling also moves onto 4/6 after a lengthy win against Antoaneta Stefanova. This was a lively struggle before move 40 but after that Stefanova didn't put up much resistance as she gave ground on the way to a loss.

Nana Dzagnidze stopped the rot that saw her lose three games in a row with a win against Xu Yuhua where she won a lengthy Rook, Knight and Pawn ending.

Zhu Chen let an opening advantage dribble away to equality and then a losing position which was converted in 67 moves by Batkhuyag Munguntuul
