1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Guven Manay, Klaus-Juergen Herlan, Zsolt Korpics, Miklos Orso and everyone else who helped with this issue.

Magnus Carlsen became world chess champion on the 22nd November after drawing the 10th game of his World Chess Championship match against Viswanthan Anand. Carlsen was a very convincing winner of the match and it surely marks a decisive jump in generation. Carlsen is the first male champion with a Facebook fan page, the first with a modelling contract and the first chess player completely of the computer generation.

Carlsen has in fact jumped a generation of players, the most prominant of which is Levon Aronian, who must surely be feeling he needs to qualify to play Carlsen next time or he may not do it at all. There are already a few players of Carlsen's age and younger right near the top of the ratings. Whilst Carlsen is of the computer generation he does not share the obsession with computer analysis that many of his rivals do, indeed he tries to avoid positions whose assessments are well established and very much decides from his own judgement what's playable or not. He thinks a lot about the game without a board, not unique amongst his rivals, but it's my feeling that he has the strongest mental concept of the board and the finest judgement of a position of anyone.

Carlsen has been world number one almost continuously for four years and of course has made promises of continued improvement and high activity as champion. The temptations of modern sports marketing, and the money that can be made, mean that he has to be careful to take care of business at the board rather than be distracted. There is the feeling there is plenty of room left for improvement and Carlsen was talking about this after the match.

Chess has pretty much always relied on its world champions to be the face of the game. It will be very interesting to see what happens now. Hopefully there are exciting times ahead.

It was sad to see Anand defeated so comprehensively and it's very difficult to see him being a force in the world championship in the future. Anand had the misfortune to see his best years coincide with anarchy in the world championship. Because of all this he managed to play so very many title events in different forms. For many his victory against Vladimir Kramnik in 2008 is the high-water mark of his career. I'd rather think of his more normal tournament victories and games, just so very many great games, often achieved with a very real sense of style. We should certainly hope that we haven't quite seen the last of them.

The 23rd World Seniors took place in Opatija 12th to 24th November. Anatoly Vaisser edged out Jens Kristiansen on tie-break after both scored 8.5/11. Krunoslav Hulak took 3rd. Yelena Ankudinova won the women's title.

The British Rapidplay took place over the weekend of 23rd to 24th November 2013. Mark Hebden won the Open tournament with a massive 9.5/11 ahead Jonathan Hawkins and Ameet Ghasi joint second on 9/11. No standings but all the games broadcast are available.

6) 4th Brno Open 2013

The 4th Brno Open took place 16th to 23rd November 2013. Zhansaya Abdumalik won the event with 7.5/9 a point clear of the field.

The II Istanbul - Cologne Friendship Match took place on the 16th November. The Istanbul team won first round clearly with 6.5:2.5. Is was remarkable that some games were hardfought. The second round in the evening was equal for a long while, but after a time out in a winning position of Cologne, it ended 5.5:3.5 in favour of the Istanbul Team.
