1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Istvan Brindza, Miklos Orso, Axel Fritz, Azer Mirzoev, Bill Townsend, Dariusz Baumann, David Navara, Harald Grafenhofer, Irina Sudakova, Yuri Vovk, Vlad Rekhson and everyone else who helped with this issue.

The Sinquefield Cup has started today. Having sponsored many events in St Louis Rex Sinquefield has stepped things up with Carlsen and Aronian joining Kamsky and Nakamura for his first super tournament. For those of us who want to see chess succeed in the states this event is a really big deal and hopefully a sign of things to come. Still plenty of chess as we head towards autumn but in particular the Spanish Team Championship has many strong players. Pavel Eljanov won the Karpov tournament in Poikovsky but the second place for last minute invitee Alexander Motylev is perhaps also interesting as the former invitee to Wijk aan Zee just doesn't have much of a profile any more (although still a top 100 rating). Plenty of chess to look at.

2) Sinquefield Cup 2013

The 1st Sinquefield Cup takes place 9th to 15th of September 2013 in St Louis. This is the final event of Magnus Carlsen before his World Championship match against Anand. Levon Aronian, Hikaru Nakamura and Gata Kamsky complete the field for this 6 round double round robin event. This is the strongest tournament in the USA since the legendary Piatigorsky Cup of 1966 and could be of immense importance going forward. Play starts at 1pm local time 7pm UK (8pm CET)

3) 14th Karpov Poikovsky 2013

The 14th Karpov GM tournament took place in Poikovsky 28th August to 7th September 2013. Players: Jakovenko, Nepomniachtchi, Eljanov, Inarkiev, Cheparinov, Laznicka, Bologan, Onischuk, Motylev and Sutovsky play. Games and results. Pavel Eljanov took clear first with 6/9 half a point clear of Alexander Motylev who was the last minute replacement for Tomashevsky and whose career has seemed on the slide for a number of years.

6) 88th ch-ARG 2013

The 88th Argentine Championship took place in Resistance followed by Saenz Pena in later rounds (I believe there may have been one additional venue). The Federation seems to have continuous problems often failing to pay for their ratings. I believe the championship scheduled for 2012 also occurred earlier this year. Ruben Felgaer has a deserved following with his well worked out and distinctly copyable opening repertoire. Fernando Peralta was the top seed but he was defeated by Diego Flores in a rapid (tied 1-1) followed by blitz playoff (2-0)

15) 135th ch-New York State 2013

The 135th ch-New York State took place 30th August to 3rd September 2013.Bill Townsend sent the games and reports:

The 135th New York State Championship was held from August 31 to September 2 in Colonie, just west of the state capitol in Albany. This is the eighth year in a row the tournament has been held at this site, but you can't argue with success: 210 players competed in the five sections making this the best turnout at the state championship in some time. To give you an idea: last year's total was only 171, and the nearest peak I can find is 202 in 2010.

However, that's not the big story here. At the top of the crosstable were three grandmasters, all rated over 2,600 and all former winners of this event. GM Alexander Ivanov was co-winner in 2007, GM Alexander Stripunsky was clear first last year and GM Joel Benjamin has been New York State Champion a record nine times. Unfortunately, the other thing these three grandmasters have in common is that none of them are New York State residents, and thereby hangs a tale.

Clear first with 5-1 was GM Ivanov. Tied for second with 4½-1½ were: GM Stripunsky, GM Benjamin, Nicolas Checa, Stanislav Busygin and FM Igor Nikolayev. Of the five only Checa and Nikolayev were New York State residents, so only Checa and Nikolayev were eligible to become the 2013 champion. The tiebreaks were so close that the two players split the $100 money for top-scoring New Yorker, but Checa edged Nikolayev on tiebreaks.

Here is the remarkable thing: Checa is just eleven (!!) years old, making him by far the youngest state champion ever. This easily beats Aleksandr Ostrovskiy who was 14 when he won the title in 2010. I'd like to say that this record will probably never be broken, but I've been at this long enough to know that's a foolish prediction to make.

The New York State Championship was first run in 1878, and is the longest running annual tournament in the United States, and possibly the world. The 67th Moscow Blitz Championship took place on 1st September 2013. Sergey Karjakin outlasted a very strong field to take clear first place with 14.5/19. Dreev, Morozevich and Grischuk were amongst those who played in the recent world cup to compete. Prizes were presented by FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. Full report below.
