1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Dragan Babic, Emmanuel Variniac, Miklos Orso and everyone else who helped with this issue.

The Zuerich Chess Challenge finished with a victory for Fabiano Caruana who won two games. Caruana and Kramnik played the most interesting chess but Kramnik couldn't quite convert any of his interesting games and lost rather suddenly to Viswanathan Anand in the final round. This allowed the World Champion to finish in 2nd. This was an interesting warm up for Kramnik and Gelfand for the Candidates Chess tournament in London. I'm sensing this might be the most important chess tournament in all the years I have been covering chess. Whilst Magnus Carlsen is favourite the formulation that you wouldn't take Carlsen against the rest of the field and it most certainly isn't impossible for any of the players to take first place. In addition I think the players sense this too and I'm expecting some amazing preparation and possibly some quite special leaps in standard especially from the younger players. Whilst I'm expecting many draws I'm also expecting extra-special chess too.

2) Zurich Chess Challenge 2013

The Zurich Chess Challenge took place 23rd February to 1st March 2013. Fabiano Caruana won the Zuerich Chess Classic 2013 alone on 4/6. In doing so has almost recovered all the rating points he lost in his uncharacteristically terrible performance in the Tata Steel tournament in January and guaranteed a speedy return to the top 10. Caruana defeated Boris Gelfand in a lengthy grind where he was putting the pressure on right from the opening phase. A fine tournament victory for Caruana who is a relentlessly accurate, almost model player. Viswanathan Anand took second place alone after being gifted a win by Vladimir Kramnik. Kramnik got slightly the better of a Berlin against Anand forcing 20.Rc6 which is a purely defensive idea. Kramnik could have taken a draw immediately with 20...Nxh3 instead he seems to have turned off momentarily and after 21...Qb8? he just lost decisive amounts of material. As Anand put it "You don't really expect a gift like this from Vlady."

5) 20th Bunratty Chess Festival 2013

The 20th Bunratty Chess Festival took place 1st to 3rd March 2013. The Masters event starred Michael Adams and Nigel Short. Michael Adams took a quick draw in the final round against Richard Bates to secure clear first place with 5.5/6. Nigel Short caught Bates on 5/6 after defeating Alex Baburin in the final round. In addition there was a Classic all-play-all norm event won by Mark Hebden with 7/9.

6) 29th Cappelle-la-Grande Open 2013

The 29th Cappelle-la-Grande Open took place 23rd February to 2nd March 2013. The event was strong and saw a big tie for first place with Sanan Sjugirov edging out Parimarjan Negi, Maxim Rodshtein, Sergey Fedorchuk, Eric Hansen, Vlad-Cristian Jianu, Alexei Fedorov and Yuri Vovk. My thanks to Emmanuel Variniac for the games.

Chinese League 2012

The Chinese league was a marathon event over 22 rounds. Rounds: Beijing 28th Apr - May 1st, Taizhou 27th-29th June, Shanghai 11th-13th July (turned out to be Tianjin), Shenzhen 14th-17th Sept, Hangzhou 6th-9th October and finally Danzhou 21st-24th Dec 2012. 31) Few significant changes in FIDE March 2013 Rating List

There were few changes in the FIDE rating list top 100 for March 1st after a quiet month for the top chess players. Magnus Carlsen remains clear number 1 at 2872 and there was no change in the order of the top 10 at all. Viswanathan Anand was the only top 10 player competing and he gained 4 points at Baden-Baden, Fabiano Caruana gained 3 points to get back up to 11 in the world after his terrible Wijk aan Zee tournament. Naiditsch lost 10 points. Big gainers: Nikita Vitiugov 18 points (57th to 30th in the World), Wesley So 17 points to 2701 and 50 in the World, Pavel Eljanov 19 points to 2697 (last couple played in the Reykjavik Open). English players: Gawain Jones returns to the top 100 rising to 2653 from 2637, Nigel Short gains 7 points to rise to 55 in the world and Michael Adams gains 2 points to remain at 23 in the world.
