1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Klaus-Juergen Herlan, Jan Mazuch, Ankit Gupta, Miklos Orso, Manfred Mussnig, and everyone else who helped with this issue.

Magnus Carlsen's performance at Wijk aan Zee has taken him to new record heights of 2872 in the newest rating list. He is now preparing for the Candidates in London in March and it has been announced that he has recruited Peter Heine Nielsen to work with him. Nielsen has worked with Carlsen before but is most well known recently as working with Viswanathan Anand. The World Champion plays in Baden-Baden starting on the 7th February and indeed a second event in Zuerich later in the month. Things are warming up quite nicely for the year's chess. Elsewhere the Aeroflot Open may be only a rapid this year but there are a huge number of players at the traditional curtain raiser the Moscow Open that is taking place now. Levon Aronian made his debut for Baden-Baden in the Bundesliga and scored 1.5/2 taking only around 30 minutes for his win. Gilbraltar had a thrilling finish with Nikita Vitiugov beating Nigel Short in a rapid playoff. There were some very interesting lectures and broadcasts videod. In particular Vassily Ivanchuk's session which is still available was very interesting.

2) Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2013

The 11th Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Masters took place 22nd to 31st January 2013. There is a very strong field. Top 20 players: Vassily Ivanchuk, Gata Kamsky, Michael Adams, Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, David Navara, Alexei Shirov, Quang Liem Le, Nigel Short, Nikita Vitiugov, Yangyi Yu, Emil Sutovsky, Daniel Fridman, Eduardo Iturrizaga, Vladislav Tkachiev, Kiril Georgiev, Gawain Jones, Mateusz Bartel, Dariusz Swiercz and Artur Jussupow. Four players tied on 8/10 and took part in a rapid playoff. Nikita Vitiugov of Russia was at the top of the leaderboard throughout and by beating Chanda Sandipan in the semi-finals and defending champion Nigel Short (who beat Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the semi-finals) in the final to be deserved winner. Short was better in game 1 and thought he was trapping Vitiugov's queen but once he found a way out his position became bad. However it look like Short was getting out but even though he was very short of time Vitiugov continued to play and won in over 100 moves.

21) Belarus Championship 2013

The Belarus Championship took place 12th to 22nd January 2013. Sergei Zhigalko took clear first with 8 points half a point clear of Vladislav Kovalev. Sadly no further games were made available from the final two rounds and there was at least one withdrawal towards the end. I'll hopefully be able to update this more next week.

22) Magnus Carlsen further clear in February FIDE Ratings

Magnus Carlsen set a new ratings record with 2872. He added 11 points to his rating after his performance in Wijk aan Zee. Levon Aronian's failure to win against Fabiano Caruana cost him the second spot retained by Vladimir Kramnik but he still gained 7 points. Caruana will be grateful for that escape at least not making worse the 24 point loss he suffered there causing him to drop out of the top 10 to 13 but he plays two important events in February. World Champion Anand moved up to 6 in the World getting back to 2780. The other big jump that catches the eye is Timur Gareev now of the USA gaining 17 points.
