1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Lennarth Eriksson, Adolivio Capece and everyone else who helped with this issue.

We may have to get used to more Rapid and Blitz and less classical chess if the Aeroflot Open's change to this format works out best for their sponsors. This week we saw the string SportAccord World Mind Games chess section with Rapid, Blitz and Blindfold chess conclude in Beijing. Fressinet, Karjakin and Aronian won the men's sections with Nakamura finishing second in all three. Lahno, Kosteniuk and Hou Yifan won the women's sections. Alexey Dreev won a second important rapid title in taking the Russian Rapid Cup. Dreev is getting a reputation as a specialist at this time control. There are two important events on Christmas Day. The World Cities in Al-Ain in the UAE and the AICF-AAI Cup in New Delhi, India. Event like the Groningen Chess Festival run over Christmas but have a rest day on the 25th and a whole host of tournaments start on Boxing Day and the couple of days after. Sadly the traditional Reggio Emilia is not one of the traditional events returning this year and it is my impression that it isn't the only one either not returning or returning with a reduced prize-fund and or field. I wish everyone a Happy Christmas.

2) SportAccord World Mind Games 2012

The SportAccord World Mind Games took place in Beijing, China 12th to 19th December 2012. Bridge, Chess, Draughts, Go and Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) were the games featured and the chess section was very strong. There were three two day events, Men's and women's sections Rapid, Blitz and finally blindfold chess.

Men's Rapid: Laurent Fressinet beat Hikaru Nakamura and edged him to the title on tie-break after both finished on 5.5/7. Women's Rapid: Kateryna Lahno edged out Hou Yifan, Humpy Koneru and Anna Muzychuk on tie-break after all scored 5/7.

Blitz Men. Sergey Karjakin won the blitz with 12.5/15 a point clear of Hikaru Nakamura. Blitz Women: Alexandra Kosteniuk won with 11.5/15 on tie-break from Anna Muzuchuk.

Blindfold Men: Levon Aronian finally came good and won with 5.5/7 half a point clear of Hikaru Nakamura who completed a hat-trick of second places in the event. Blindfold Women: Hou Yifan won with 6/7 half a point clear of Viktorija Cmilyte who beat the winner.

7) Rapid Grand Prix of Russia Final 2012

The Final of the Rapid Grand Prix of Russia took place 23rd-24th December 2012. Alexey Dreev beat Vladislav Artemiev in the final 1.5-0.5. Game 1 Dreev-Artemiev: Slav drawn by repetition after 53 moves. Game 2 Artemiev-Dreev. Caro-Kann where Dreev seemed to catch out his opponent and was soon winning. Dreev won the exchange and although the win wasn't quite as quick as it might have been it was fairly certain. This is rapid specialist Dreev's second title in just over week after winning the European Rapid Championship the previous Sunday. Dreev will also no doubt be looking forward to the Aeroflot Open in February 2013 which has been converted to a rapid too.

22) Chinese League 2012

The Chinese league was a marathon event over 22 rounds. Rounds: Beijing 28th Apr - May 1st, Taizhou 27th-29th June, Shanghai 11th-13th July (turned out to be Tianjin), Shenzhen 14th-17th Sept, Hangzhou 6th-9th October and finally Danzhou 21st-24th Dec 2012. (info http://blog.sina.com.cn/chessnews). Shanghai Jianqiao Academy Team took the title.

Coverage was a total mess with the first 7 rounds of games coming from the Chess Results Server, round 8 is missing and the remaining games I saved from live coverage. The final 4 rounds had no live coverage and the dates and I believe venue were changed at the last minute. It is at least possible games by such an important figure as Vassily Ivanchuk will be lost. It is to be hoped that a complete league file will emerge eventually but surely the Chinese Chess Federation can do better than this.
