1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Arvin Aaron, Steve Stahl, Eirik T. Gullaksen and everyone else who helped with this issue.

This week turned into a very interesting one with a number of new events. At the start Hikaru Nakamura completed a nice win in the Unive tournament in Hoogeveen for his best result for a while. Anatoly Karpov has shown himself still to be a fine rapid player and leads a tournament named after him alongside Vassily Ivanchuk with 8 of the 14 rounds gone in Cap d'Agde. Corsica hosts another rapid event and Etienne Bacrot and Laurent Fressinet will contest the final in a couple of days. Alexei Shirov stars in the Chigorin Memorial but he has already been held to a couple of draws. So plenty to look at.

2) 16th Unive Tournament 2012

The 16th Unive Chess Festival took place in Hoogeveen 19th to 27th October 2012. The main tournament was the 4 player Crown group with Nakamura, Giri, Tiviakov and Hou Yifan. Nakamura put an end to a bad run of results winning with 4.5/6. Top seed Erwin L'Ami and Friso Nijboer scored 7/9 in the Open.

There are 14 rounds in a double round robin before the event finishes with a knockout to settle the final placings. The moves for Bauer-Karpov are clearly not correct at one stage but couldn't see the easy fix.

The Bundesliga first weekend took place 20th to 21st October 2012. Favourites OSG Baden-Baden started with two wins. The main story is that Falko Bindrich was accused of cheating by using his mobile phone during the game during frequent visits to the toilet during a game against Sebastian Siebrecht. He refused to show the contents of the phone and so he and his team were defaulted. There is also an appeal about his round 1 game the day before when he beat Pavel Tregubov.
