1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Valery Maes, Kristianus Liem, Frank Berry, Miklos Orso, Henri Koskinen, Sean Hewitt, Jakub Fuksik and everyone else who helped with this issue.

Another busy week. Magnus Carlsen won yet another elite tournament coming from behind to catch Fabiano Caruana before defeating him easily in a blitz match. Carlsen is clearly the dominant tournament player of this age and is less than a handful of overtaking Kasparov's peak elo (albeit that there has been rating inflation). Caruana has also made huge leaps in the last 12 months and shouldn't feel too bad about yet another impressive performance. World Champion Viswanathan Anand was casually outplayed by Carlsen in the penultimate round his only that didn't finish in a draw. The malaise that has affected Anand's play since last year's event still hasn't gone away. Most of the leading players not in Bilbao are in Isreal for the European Club Cup. I'm not sure people care too much about which team wins but there is always a lot of high quality individual games on view at this event.

2) 5th Sao Paulo/Bilbao Final Masters

Magnus Carlsen won the 5th Final Masters which started in Sao Paulo and concluded in Bilbao after a blitz playoff with Fabiano Caruana. Caruana took a quick draw with black against Francisco Vallejo Pons, Magnus Carlsen had to work a bit harder to hold Levon Aronian. Game of the day was probably Viswanathan Anand against Sergey Karjakin which was a sharp Semi-Slav which was also drawn. Carlsen and Caruana tied on 17 points but Carlsen won the blitz playoff 2-0 winning the first game in a rook and pawn ending with black and winning a piece quickly in game two.
