1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Rafael Cortes Jurado, Kamil Pravd�k, Spiros Ilandzis Miklos Orso and everyone else who helped with this issue.

The Olympiad in Istanbul in Turkey finished with the Armenian team headed by Levon Aronian winning the title for the 3rd time in 4 Olympiads. They can thank the USA for beating their main rivals and favourites Russia in the 9th round and the Ukrainians beating the Chinese in the final round. If Russia were just about favourites to win the gold in the open event then China were real favouries in the women's. With two rounds to go it seemed inconceivable that they wouldn't be champions. Then they drew against Kazakhstan a team with players several hundred points weaker than them, and then the Russians overtook them on tie-break by beating this same team 4-0. Next weekend sees the resumption of a number of team events.

2) 40th Chess Olympiad 2012

The 40th Chess Olympiad Istanbul took place 27th August to 9th September 2012.

Armenia captured their third title in their last four attempts after defeating Hungary 2.5-1.5 in the final round thanks to a win from Sergei Movsesian. Their leader Levon Aronian also captured gold on board 1. The round 10 leaders China were defeated 3-1 by Ukraine where Vassily Ivanchuk destroyed Wang Hao on top board. Russia were level with Armenia on 19 points but had a worse tie-break even after beating Germany 3-1. Ukraine took bronze.

In the women's Olympiad Russia destroyed Kazakhstan 4-0 in the final round and took the title on tie-break from China who only just struggled past Bulgaria 2.5-1.5. Russia did what China failed to do in Round 10, beat a Kazakhstan who did really well but were vastly outrated on every board.

The Chinese league is a marathon event over 22 rounds. Rounds: Beijing 28th Apr - May 1st, Taizhou 27th-29th June, Shanghai 11th-13th July (turned out to be Tianjin), Shenzhen 14th-17th Sept, Hangzhou 6th-9th October and finally Tianjin 19th-22nd Dec 2012.
