1) Introduction

My thanks to Roland Wimmer, Olexandr Prohorov, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Gianni Gigante, Jack Peters, Harald Frafenhofer, Sergey Abramov, Gerard Demuydt and Paulo Rocha.

The French Chess Championships was the top event of the week and it finished in a sad manner after 10 of its 11 rounds when Christian Bauer had news of the loss of his 4 month old child. The players didn't feel like playing on and the title was shared a completely understandable decision. Garry Kasparov was arrested in Moscow but was released after a shambolic case against him. However Kasparov is definitely playing a dangerous game. Finally the 40th Olympiad starts in Istanbul tomorrow. Always a sprawling event it will be covered with live video live on the internet by the same team that did the excellent Tal Memorial and World Championship so should be very enjoyable for those who have the time to look in.

2) 40th Chess Olympiad 2012

The 40th Chess Olympiad takes place in Istanbul, Turkey 27th August (Opening 28th R1) to 9th September 2012. Play starts 15:00 local time, 13:00 BST. Elo favourites Russia haven't won the title since 2002, defending champions Ukraine and Armenia are all close to full strength. World number 1 Magnus Carlsen will not be playing and rather shockingly the 2014 hosts Norway can't find the money to field an any way representative team. England with Adams, Jones and Short are about as strong as could be expected given that McShane is only a part time player.

3) French Championships 2012

The French Chess Championships for men and women took place in Pau 13th to 25th August 2012. Romain Edouard, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Etienne Bacrot and Christian Bauer all had 7/10 going into the final round. However then there was the shock news of the death of Christian Bauer's 4 month old child. On the proposal of the players the 11th and final round was cancelled. Edouard, Vachier and Bacrot were to play off for the title on Saturday but on further reflection it was decided that all 4 players should share the title. Almira Skripchenko won the women's title with 7/10.

The Chinese league is a marathon event over 22 rounds. Rounds: Beijing 28th Apr - May 1st, Taizhou 27th-29th June, Shanghai 11th-13th July (turned out to be Tianjin), Shenzhen 14th-17th Sept, Hangzhou 6th-9th October and finally Tianjin 19th-22nd Dec 2012. 29) Russian Online Blitz Grand Prix Open 2012

The Final Tournaments of Online Grand Prix Open 2012 took place August 14. 4 groups of 12 players each participated. Best 2 players from each of the 4 groups made their way to the Super Final Tournament of August 15, where they will compete for the grand prize. The tournament had a prize fund of $38000 and is organized by the Russian Chess Federation at ChessOK Playing Zone.

The Super Final Tournament of Online Grand Prix Open 2012 took place August 15. 8 players competed for the grand prize in a knockout tournament.

The quarterfinal featured the following matches: Volkov - Safarli 0,5:3,5; Zubov - Kovalenko 3:1; Andreikin - Andriasian 2,5:1,5 and Grischuk - Amonatov 2,5:2,5. The semifinal results: Grischuk - Safarli 1,5:2,5 and Andreikin - Zubov 3:1.

After 4 games of the final match between Eltaj Safarli and Dmitriy Andreikin resulted an a draw (2:2), an armageddon game was used as a tie-breaker. The game ended in yet another draw, and Dmitriy Andreikin - who played as Black and with less time - won the Super Final Tournament of Online Grand Prix 2012.
