THE WEEK IN CHESS 884 17th October 2011 by Mark Crowther

1) Introduction

My thanks to Alexander Prokhorov, Roland Wimmer, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Holger Lieske, Miklos Orso, Frank Berry, Ilgar Bajarani, Kristianus Liem, Rafael Cortes Jurado and Georgios Souleidis and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another hugely busy and significant week of chess. At the start Magnus Carlsen confirmed his status as number one player in the world by coming from behind at the 4th Final Masters in Bilbao to catch Vassily Ivanchuk and then beat him in a rapid playoff. Hikaru Nakamura's joint 3rd could and should have been much better, but in the long term I don't think this matter so much, it looks to me that the revamping of his game has started to pay off and we'll see rapidly improving results from him. World Champion Viswanathan Anand acknowledged his performance in the event was poor and could have been worse, I think we'll see a determination to perform much better next month in the Tal Memorial.

This was by no means the only strong event this week. Sergey Karjakin won a low-key Karpov Memorial in Poikovsky, Alexander Morozevich went on a rampage in the Saratov Governor's Cup and just needs to finish things off with at least a 50% score in the final two rounds including a game against Ruslan Ponomariov who got mired down with draws. Finally Vladimir Kramnik is another player who has had to go backwards to go forwards again. He has become far more aggressive recently and has started with 2/2 in the Unive tournament in Hoogeveen.

Elsewhere the Bundesliga started and was just one of many team events this week. The SPICE Cup has seen Le Quang Liem start quickly. Zhao Xue has scored an amazing 7.5/8 to be three! points clear of the field in the Nalchik FIDE Women's Grand Prix with three rounds to go.

2) 4th Bilbao / Sao Paulo Final Masters

The 4th Final Masters tournament took place in Sao Paulo Monday 26th September - 1st October before transferring to Bilbao 6th-11th October. Players: Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand, Levon Aronian, Hikaru Nakamura, Vassily Ivanchuk and Francisco Vallejo Pons. Double Round Robin with Sofia Rules and 3 points for a win. The time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves then 60 minutes and 10 seconds per move for the rest seems calculated to produce more decisive, if not necessarily better, games. Magnus Carlsen beat long time leader Vassily Ivanchuk in a blitz playoff to take the title after they tied for first.

There was a Swiss Open alongside but I couldn't find any games.

Note there were three points for a win and one for a draw.

The 15th Unive Tournament takes place 14th-22nd October 2011. The Crown Group takes place 16th-22nd Oct with Vladimir Kramnik, Anish Giri, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Judit Polgar. The Open started Friday 14th with Sergei Tiviakov, Vladimir Baklan, Sipke Ernst, Ukrainian rising stars Yaroslav Zherebukh and Illya Nyzhnyk. Vladimir Kramnik made impressive use of the white pieces in the first two rounds with dynamic wins very much in his new active style against Anish Giri and Judit Polgar. The other two games have been drawn.

4) Saratov Governor's Cup

The Governor's Cup takes place in Saratov, Russia 7th-20th October 2011. Ponomariov, Morozevich, Leko, Vitiugov, Moiseenko, Shirov, Tomashevsky, Andreikin, Eljanov, Ni Hua, Roiz and Alekseev play. Play starts at 12pm UK time. Morozevich starts with 7/9 including an astonishingly exciting draw with Alexei Shirov. He's busy reminding us precisely why his return to form is one of the best bits of chess news in quite some time. Evgeny Tomashevsky is a point and a half further behind. Peter Leko on +1 is in joint second in a field that has gradually become subdued under the weight of Morozevich's scoring.

5) 12th Karpov International

The 12th Karpov International took place in Poikovsky 4th-13th October 2011. Etienne Bacrot caught Sergey Karjakin with a win in the final round, both finished on 5.5/9. Bacrot took first on tie-break. Fabiano Caruana finished half a point further back. Probably the event was a little too strong for its own good. Karjakin and Caruana are still juniors but also experienced GMs, I think a couple more ambitious up and coming players might have made the event more interesting, as it was only 11/45 games were decisive.

7) Magistral Casino Barcelona 2011

The Magistral Casino Barcelona tournament takes place 12th-20th October 2011. The continued return of Yasser Seirawan is probably the biggest interest. Sadly GM Eduardo Iturrizaga had a nasty car accident on the way to the airport (he's more or less fine but the car is a write-off) and had to withdraw. So the event goes ahead with just 9 players. Yasser didn't get to play until round 2 and was doing rather well until being destroyed by Ilia Smirin in Round 6.

Chinese League 2011

The Chinese League started 12th April. This week saw rounds 10-12: 10th-12th July. This year has been a bit of a mess after last year's clear coverage. They change the dates from those shown in chess results so it just turned up this week, the live coverage has broken down for the second successive batch of matches (round 12) and the archive Chinese League Games hasn't been updated (maybe there is an archive elsewhere). Allegedly the next rounds are 13-15 in Qingdao on 26th-28th October, but who knows, at this stage they seem to be making things up as they go along.

The top prize will be an expenses paid trip (flight plus accommodation) to the SportAccord World Mind Games. The winner is not entitled to actually play in the Mind Games, but will be a guest at the event and assist in some social and cultural events promoting chess in China. Playchess.com and ChessBase GmbH will provide extra prizes (software packages) for all players in the final, and some lucky players in the preliminary.
