1) Introduction

My thanks to Alexander Prokhorov, Roland Wimmer, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Holger Lieske, Miklos Orso, Sinisa Joksic, Stewart Reuben, Vishal Sareen and everyone else who helped with the issue.

If this issue seems a little hurried then it is. Just another brutal week of chess work for me. Many strong events, and the start of many teams events all take time.

The Bilbao / Sao Paulo Final Masters saw Vassily Ivanchuk blow a nearly decisive lead to be caught by Magnus Carlsen who beat him in the 9th round. We perhaps shouldn't complain too much that Ivanchuk goes to war when it might be more sensible to go for a draw (there are plenty of the reverse kind of professional around, many of them playing at Poikovsky judging by the results) but he still has a chance in the final round with white against Aronian. Carlsen plays Hikaru Nakamura who might also have been sharing the lead if he hadn't had a mental aberration and decided he'd made 40 moves when he hadn't. Vallejo isn't doing very well in the event but he's been the recipiant of some remarkable donations. His win even relegates Viswanathan Anand to last place. Anand has lost two and won just the one game, it is the latter statistic that is the real problem. He just isn't really trying that hard these days for a win, an old World Champions disease. Anand's priority is clearly now the World Title matches but I think this result may encourage him to modify this approach.

If the Karpov International in Poikovsky field didn't look that promising for excitement (they're very, very strong but mostly solid top class GMs) then the Governor's Cup in Saratov field always looked exciting and it looks very promising especially with Alexander Morozevich's fast 2.5/3 start (they teased us with all draws in the first round).

Finally we were treated to a trip down memory lane with Kasparov having to give himself a good old fashioned kick up the backside to win the final game of his blitz match against Nigel Short after blowing a two point lead to be level going into the game. You could see the old competitive spirit there in what was "just" an exhibition, but nevertheless one he wanted to win.

2) 4th Bilbao / Sao Paulo Final Masters

The 9th round of the 4th Final Masters in Bilbao saw all the games finish decisively. Magnus Carlsen won an exciting game against Vassily Ivanchuk. Carlsen worked very hard to create an advantage against Ivanchuk but the latter had no need to play anything so complex in the first place. Carlsen got his rook to the 7th but this wasn't decisive and in fact he missed Ivanchuk's fine defence. However the resulting position saw Ivanchuk have a difficult defense with only a couple of minutes on the clock and he eventually dropped a piece. Levon Aronian was glad to play a fine game of chess after his loss to Nakamura. He sacrificed a pawn for the initiative against World Champion Viswanathan Anand who has been disappointingly quiet. Anand eventually missed his way and is now in last place. This is because Francisco Vallejo Pons was truly gifted another win, this time by Hikaru Nakamura. Nakamura became confused on move 40 in a favourable position and even though he should have been able to work out he needed to play another move went for an orange juice and lost on time for his most "painful ever" loss. Rd9 Standings: 1st= Carlsen, Ivanchuk 14pts, 3rd= Nakamura, Aronian 11, 5th Vallejo Pons 10 and Anand 9 Final round 10 pairings: Ivanchuk-Aronian, Anand-Vallejo and Nakamura-Carlsen. Play-off if required 2 blitz games 4 mins + 3 seconds per move. Final Armageddon 5m to 4m sudden death games with black having draw odds will also be played if necessary.

There is a Swiss Open alongside but I couldn't find any games.

Note there are three points for a win and one for a draw.

3) Kasparov-Short Blitz Match

The "Your Next Move" 8 game blitz match took place in Leuven, Belgium on 9th October 2011. Garry Kasparov beat Nigel Short 4.5-3.5 in an entertaining blitz match that went down to the final game all square. This blitz match saw the first three games drawn, Kasparov win the next two, Short win the two after that before a noticably determined Kasparov won the final game to win the match.

4) Saratov Governor's Cup

The Governor's Cup takes place in Saratov, Russia 7th-20th October 2011. Ponomariov, Morozevich, Leko, Vitiugov, Moiseenko, Shirov, Tomashevsky, Andreikin, Eljanov, Ni Hua, Roiz and Alekseev play. With top players such as Ponomariov and Leko (who I think has a lot to prove but I think he knows that and is hopefully prepared to give full reign to his talent which is often mired in over-caution), and two of the most exciting players in Morozevich and Shirov. This could prove to be one of the events of the year. Events develop their own personality, so far the Karpov International looks like a draw-fest, this could really be exciting. 11 rounds give scope for some risk-taking. Play starts at 12pm UK time.

Veselin Topalov went to Dublin on October 3rd 2011. He played a clock simul against the Irish Men's Team (GM Alex Baburin, IM Sam Collins, IM Alex Lopez and IM Mark Quinn). Topalov lost to Alex Baburin, drew with Sam Collins and Alex Lopez and beat Mark Quinn. So the match was drawn 2-2. Games now available.

When I looked into it I believe several games have been mixed up but it is impossible for me to work out which ones to switch. I started to try before deciding to give the original file in case there is someone from Russia who was there who can actually do the whole job properly. The Swiss Teams National A takes place 27th Feb - 23rd October 2011. Players include Fabiano Caruana, Vadim Milov, Alexey Dreev, Chrisitan Bauer, Viktor Korchnoi etc. Rounds 6-7 took place 27th-28th August 2011. Games and standings now available. Final Rounds 8-9 take place 22nd-23rd October 2011.

Chinese League 2011

The Chinese League started 12th April. This week saw rounds 10-12: 10th-12th July. This year has been a bit of a mess after last year's clear coverage. They change the dates from those shown in chess results so it just turned up this week, the live coverage has broken down for the second successive batch of matches (round 12) and the archive Chinese League Games hasn't been updated (maybe there is an archive elsewhere). Allegedly the next rounds are 13-15 in Qingdao on 26th-28th October, but who knows, at this stage they seem to be making things up as they go along.

37) SportAccord World Mind Games Online

The first edition of SportAccord World Mind Games will take place from 8-16 December 2011 in Beijing. 15 Round Swiss Qualifier on PlayChess 29th October. 3 mins + 2 seconds per move.

29th October at 14:00 (Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Warsaw time - 13:00 UK time - 08:00 New York time)

one preliminary 15 round Swiss tourney at 3 minutes + 2 seconds/move

the twelve top players of the preliminary tourney will qualify for a final round robin tournament also with 3 minutes + 2 seconds/move.

The top prize will be an expenses paid trip (flight plus accommodation) to the SportAccord World Mind Games. The winner is not entitled to actually play in the Mind Games, but will be a guest at the event and assist in some social and cultural events promoting chess in China. Playchess.com and ChessBase GmbH will provide extra prizes (software packages) for all players in the final, and some lucky players in the preliminary.
