Karpov is playing his normal positional chess and Kamsky is countering this by playing a strategically risky, tactical style. Karpov used to be very successful against this style but Karpov is no longer quite the player he used to be. His preparation, whilst good, is no longer fiercesome. Whilst both players are trying to get in their improvements in the opening the variations are not ultra-critical. Kamsky held the draw with Black playing in a very active style, game 5 was quite an extravigant defence. Kamsky played game four as though he had the advantage but he was pretty much worse throughout most of the game. His position just fell apart in the end and Karpov even had the luxury of missing an earlier direct win. This was a very poor game from Kamsky. Nigel Short won his match by taking on Karpov tactically and he kept the pressure up throughout the match, this is perhaps Kamsky's plan too. If he can keep the pace of the games up for the entire match without losing too many early games he has a good chance of winning the match. 3) Sigeman Wernbro Grandmaster Tournament Malmo Sweden ---------------------------------------------------- Piotr Nestorow reports on this excellent Swedish event in Malmo Sweden 11-19 June 1996. The event see's Timman's first wins of 1996. Once he started winning he could hardly stop! Nevertheless it is still close at the top. Jeroen van den Berg reports: In the 7th round of the WOLTERS KLUWER Dutch Championships, the two leaders Timman and Sokolov met. The game started a little bit later because Timman was distracted by the light above his board. When this problem had been solved, the players opted for a Nimzo-Indian defense. The two players know each other quite well. They are friends, while Sokolov also was Timmans second in his Candidate Match against Valery Salov (SanghiNagar, 1994). The game itself was slightly disappointing. After the opening black had no problems at all and Timman managed to equalize the game easily. After 26 moves both players agreed to a draw. Timman holds the best chances for his ninth national title. Defending champion Ivan Sokolov stays the main concurrent of Timman. Sokolov: 'There are still four rounds to go, so everything is still possible. I do not think that this was a crucial game.' The other players don't play for the title any more. Van der Sterren and Van der Wiel fell both back after they had started well and Jeroen Pikets play makes a tired impression. Piket has played quite a lot this year and maybe because of this he played many draws so far in this tournament. The teams had to be submitted not later than June 15th 1996 so hopefully we can get the information about the the lineups for all nations. Perhaps the information will eventually appear on the FIDE pages: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/casto_abundo/ The key question will be who represents Russia. The English team will be Men: Nigel Short Michael Adams Jon Speelman Matthew Sadler Julian Hodgson Tony Miles Non-playing Captain: David Norwood Women: Susan Lalic Harriet Hunt Ruth Sheldon Jana Bellin Non-playing Captain: Chris Ward I always try and mention the sponsors in articles in TWIC but it is clear that the English Olympiad team would certainly not have been at full strength for the last ten year's without the private bankers Duncan Lawrie Ltd. John Nunn who has played in the last 10 Olympiads was unavailable. Ruth Sheldon is thought to be the youngest ever player to represent England in an Olympiad. 7) FIDE Message from Iljumzhinov ----------------------------- Communique by FIDE President Kirsan N. Iljumzhinov Elista, 10 June 1996 To: All National Chess Federations Dear Chess Friends The Presidential Board and Executive Council took place on 6 & 7 June in Elista, Kalmyk Republic, in conjunction with the opening of the Karpov-Kamsky World Championship Match. The Meeting successfully completed discussion on 40 items covering long ranging topics including the Karpov-Kamsky Match, progress of the Yerevan Olympiad & Congress, the administrative restructure of FIDE, the proposed Annual World Championship and several other developmental projects. All foreign guests and journalists were received in Moscow and flown to Elista where they were given a very warm reception with music and dance at the airport. The Karpov- Kamsky Match started on 6 June 1996 and there was full capacity in the playing hall. In the spirit of world unity, the Executive Council recommends that the FIDE Elections, in Yerevan, for the presidential ticket to consist of the existing eight offices. In recent months, I had been busy trying my best to organize the World Championship. Now that this is in progress, I shall devote more time communicating with you. I shall send you a weekly communique. I believe that through regular communication, we shall understand one another better. I appeal to your cooperation to achieve unity in the Chess World. As my normal work often requires me to be in Elista or Moscow, you could either communicate with me or forward any of your suggestions and requests to Administrative Manager Ignatius Leong on Tel & Fax: (7)095-913 32 34. GENS UNA SUMUS Sincerely yours, KIRSAN N. ILJUMZHINOV FIDE President President of the Kalmyk Republic 8) Leon International Tournament ------------------------------ Juergen Daniel reports: Veselin Topalov was the deserved tournament winner in the 9th edition of the Magistal "Ciudad de Leon". He has had no bad position in any of his games and only blundered in his game against Judith Polgar. Asked after the tournament, he said "difficult to say which was my best game". In nearly "Hubnerian"- style he replied to be more satisfied with the result than with the games. Judith Polgar expected more after the first half of the tournament. But shared first place after the bad tournament of Dos Hermanas made her altogether happy. Peter Leko didn't play for two months and had prepared well for Leon. He was missing good chances in his first game against Judith and more obviously against Illescas, where 18.Nf6+ would have been a real killer! Miguel Illescas, after Shirov Espana`s numero dos, had a bad tournament after a fanatastic and a good tournament in Madrid resp. Dos Hermanas he was a bit tired. In Leon he lost some of his recently gained ELO-points. But as he expressed during the tournament: ELO and results mean nothing for me. I want to play intereresting games, no more. In the B-tournament Leon-organiser Marcelino Sion won on tie-break. While in the last years playing and organising at the same time led to last places, he could convice all Leoneses who where waiting for a win of a local hero. I expect, that the new formule with the A+B tournament will be seen 1997 again. As local papers had it on their sports headlines: "1997 Kasparov will play". In the meantime whole Leon is preparing for the University chess-worldchampionship which will be held from 12.-23.July in Leon. My thanks to press officer Javier Ochoa and "Commentarista" Zenon Franco. The venue is the Octagon Centre of the University of Sheffield. There will be two rounds per day from Monday to Thursday and the final round will be on Friday. Round times are 10:00 to 16:00 and 17:00 to 23:00. Rates of play will be 40 moves in two hours each and then the rest of the game in an hour each. The chief controller will be FIDE arbiter John Robinson of Kettering. It is believed that this is the first ever International Master tournament in Sheffield. It is also the first international in Yorkshire for a long, long time, probably since Scarborough, 1930. The event is happy to acknowledge the assistance, both financial and supportive, of the British Chess Federation. The time control was Game in 30 minutes. "Angel" drew both games, and was never in any serious trouble. She had a pre-match strategy of quickly going for endgames, which she carried out very well in both games. She avoided complicated middlegame tactics, which are usually a computer's strength. The games are presented below in PGN notation. WGM Belakovskaia discussed the second game for an hour after the match, and answered questions from the spectators. It appeared she might have had a win in the endgame of Game 2. The ICC has hosted 2 "Man versus Machine" matches this year. In the first, Ferret defeated GM Boris Gulko 2-0. In the second, GM Shirov defeated Ferret 2-0. Ferret is the 1995 World Amateur Microcomputer Champion. 13) Crimean Championship by Gerald Schendel --------------------------------------- Crimean championship (men) (17.02.-25.02.96): 1. So the house doors are open, the sun is shining, Bette Midlerts Rose is in the air and life is good. The chess books I received the last weeks are even as good. Batsford is publishing a lot after a quiet period in the winter. A new publisher to this Reviewcolumn is R&D Publishing, who contributes with two very interesting Karpov books. More Karpov at Batsford with Best Games book with 43 fine analysed games. Somehow I miss a book on Kamsky from any publishers! Maybe his long delay in deciding to play is debit to this. Gata, if you read this: keep up the perfect performance in games 2 and 3, and somehow keep your dad quiet. His recent politic statements aren't exceptable, likewise the FIDE move to IRAQ wasn't. Anyway a lot of attention to Karpov. Special attention for the following books: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- OPENING The Caro-Kann in Black & White, A.Karpov & A.Beliavsky, R&D Publishing 1994 First the Karpov wave: Anatoly Karpov's Best Games, A.Karpov, Batsford 1996, 175 p. (ISBN 0-7134-7843- 8) Price: British Pound 14.99 This book is created for a wide public which sometimes keeps the level of analyses in the endgame phase lower then necessary. (Comparing some games from this book with the Endgame Arsenal shows there is more depth in the analysis). But the games are each highlights of his career, which hopefully will last some decades longer. His revival in the Linares 1994 tournament and later matches is hopeful. Although the cover promises 64 games, only 43 games are in the book, of which most have won brilliancy prices in Informators or in tournaments. The first game is from 1969 (against Gik) and the last from 1994 (a brilliant 20 moves win over Beliavski in Linares). With 8 games his matches against Kasparov get more attention then games against any other player. For those in the possession of all Informators, there probably isn't much new, but for those you like the best of Karpov (except from Mrs. Karpov of course, which is a joke, not an insult), buy and enjoy 43 brilliancies. The Caro-Kann in Black & White, A.Karpov & A.Beliavsky, R&D Publishing 1994, 196 p. (ISBN 1-883358-16-7) Price: $24.95 More best of Karpov is this superb book on the Caro-Kann. I don't play this opening, but first of all the way it is setup with a knowledgable White and another Black expert is interesting. That the experts are EXPERTS Beliavsky for White and Karpov for Black says enough. Beliavsky has won fine games against the worlds best, Karpov trusted the Caro Kann in dozens of WM match games (don't ask Sokolov and Timman about this). All mainlines, the Panow (c4), 3.e5, classical with 4...Bf5, Nimzowitch with 4...Nf6 5.Nxf6 and the actual Smyslov 4...Nd7 are analysed deeply from both points of view. Main interest concentrates on the moment opening changes to middlegames were pawnstructure and piece activity is vital. The better of this often lasts till the endgame. Here lays the real secret of the Caro Kann, (which perfectly suites Karpovts style.) A high quality book which was published in 1994 but doesn't lost any of it's value. This book is also electronically available as a SMARTBOOK. Karpov's Endgame Arsenal, A.Karpov & E.Gik, R&D Publishing 1996, 147 p. (ISBN 1- 883358-20-5) Price: $ 21.95 What do you need to know about the endgame if you are a World Champion. Of course your classics. Karpov gives an interesting look at the contribution of his fellow World Champions in this phase of the game. In a chapter called "Studies and World Champions" one can concluded that Botwinnik and Smyslov are the best in this field. Practically Capablanca is also a master in the field of the endgame (for those who can lay their hands on it I recommend Irving Chernev's Capablanca Best Chess Endings, Dover, which shows his perfect technical handling.) Of course his analyses of 20 endgames of his one is a highlight in the book, but also the chapter "A selection of quartets" shows Karpovs interest in the field of endgame studies. A nice extra by the hand of Ron Henley is his analyses of Karpovs 4 endgame victories in Groningen 1995 and a team tournament. Winning with the Kan, Ali Mortazavi, Batsford 1996, 144 p. (ISBN 0-7134-7803-9) Price: British Pounds 12.99 The Sicilian has many, deeply analysed lines like the Svesnikov, some Najdorf and Poisened Pawn variations, were novelties occur almost in the endgamefase. To keep up with the "opening" theory is almost impossible. Ali Mortazavi offers a way for Black to get out of all this work by suggesting a flexible system with e6 and a6 to save learning long lines, and get a flexible which can be played on general understanding.. The game can go into Scheveninger-like positions, but also into Hedgehog type of play, all depending on Black's favour. In the middle game Black often takes the initiative in the centre by breaking with d5, or if White castles long, going for the King at the Queenside. But no rush is necessary. One of the conclusions I draw from the book was that the White setup with c4 aren't any fun for Black. Active bishops guarantee a nice game. The 32 analysed games in this book give Black some good ideas. The Nimzovich Defense to 1.e4, Hugh E.Myers, Caissa Editions 1995, 176 p. (ISBN 0-939433-22-2) Price: $ Some books deserve rest to get me into shape to look at them. This third edition of The Nimzovich Defense to 1.e4 has reached it's best "temperature" and the material has grown to it's full potention in the hands of Hugh Myers. The author is famous for his Myers Opening Bulletin where the odd and strange of the opening is presented. To several of the authors from that magazine, 1.e4 Nc6 is non-provocotive. In 8 chapters with very deep analysed lines (120 pages total) all different White and Black setups are discussed. Myers also has interesting thoughts about other openings when they transpose to the Nimzovich, like the French and Vienna. To complete the theory, 147 annotated games are added, a player and opening index complete the whole picture. Strangely the somehow chaotic lay-out (in comparing with a Batsford opening book for example) adds to the value. It's like going into some old candy shop where all little boxes with unknown tastes can be found. A very special opening with a lot of surprises to be found. ========================================================================== Addresses Batsford Ltd 4 Fitzhardinge Street London W1H 0AH England E-mail: 100617.2702@Compuserve.com (Graham Burgess, managing editor) Cadogan Books London House Parkgate Road London SW11 4NQ England E-mail: chess@cadogan.demon.co.uk Also distributing for Pickard&Sons, Grandmaster Publishing, Hypermodern Press and Hays Publishing in Europe Chess Enterprises 107 Crosstree Road Moon Township, PA 15108-2607 USA E-mail: Dudley@Robert Morris.EDU Drukkerij van Spijk P.O.Box 210 NL-5900 AE Venlo Netherlands Dreier Verlag Reinhold Dreier Seydlitzstrasse 13 D-67061 Ludwigshafen Deutschland Interchess P.O.Box 3053 NL-1801 GB Alkmaar Netherlands E-mail: nic@xs4all.nl WWW: http://www.xs4all.nl/~nic/ S1 Editrice Via Porrettana 111 I-40135 Bologna Italy E-mail: a.trebbi@globe.it Verlag Maedler Lilienthalstrasse 52 D-40474 Dusseldorf Deutschland Rochade Verlag H.Koehler Vogelsbergstrasse 21 D-63477 Maintal Deutschland E-mail: 100600.2505@compuserve.com Schachverlag Kania Hofpfad 32 D-71701 Schwieberdingen Deutschland Edition OLMS AG Breitlenstrasse 11 CH-8634 Hombrechtikon/Zurich Schweiz HE-chess p.a.
