1) Introduction

My thanks to Anjo Anjewierden, Aram Hajian, Arthur Kogan, Haroon or Rashid, Marcin Jurkowski, Doug Bake, Eirik T. Gullaksen, Mark Levitt, Gary Suffield, Hassan Khaled, Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk, Ian Doyle, Dimitris Skyrianoglou, Spiros Ilandzis, Hector Francovig, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Mateusz Bartel, Michael Meinders, Mikel Larreategi, Robert Ericsson, Vincent Lejeune, Dennis Monokroussos, Zenon Franco Ocampos and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another huge week of chess. Apart from last year Kramnik has dominated the Dortmund tournament almost every time he has played. Normal service was resumed this year with Kramnik running out a convincing winner in the end and taking the event for the 9th time. The Donostia (San Sebastian) Chess Festival has roots going back to Capablanca who made his name there at the beginning of his tournament career. Hikaru Nakamura is dominating matters at the moment with a 5/6 start. The amount of work which is needed to stay in touch and competitive these days requires a lot of work. Karpov isn't that bad a player but inferior openings and consequent time trouble is proving too much as he has started with 1/6. It has been announced however he will play rapid and blitz against Gary Kasparov in a match celebrating the 25th anniversary of their epic series of world title matches between 1984 and 1990. Elsewhere there is the normal summer fair with lots of interesting chess worldwide.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Dortmund

The Dortmund Chess Meeting took place 2nd-12th July 2009. Vladimir Kramnik won the Dortmund tournament for the 9th time. He resumes his almost unbroken success at this event after a poor score last year. Kramnik won two out of the last three rounds and had at least one chance with black in round 9. The event saw very hot weather and with that some tame draws but Kramnik played excellently towards the end and deserved his win a point clear of Peter Leko, Magnus Carlsen and Dmitry Jakovenko.

4) Kasparov vs Karpov Match in September

The newspaper Marca (journalist Jesus J. Boyero) broke the news that Kasparov and Karpov will play a 12 game (4 Rapid and 8 blitz) match in Valencia 21st-24th September 2009. The match is on the 25th Anniversary of the start of their infamous first aborted match in Moscow in 1984-5, this was followed by an epic series of close World title matches which ended in Lyon 1990.

Their World Championship record summarises as: Kasparov 21 wins - Karpov 19 wins and 104 games were drawn.

Moscow 1984-5 Karpov-Kasparov (+5 -3 =40) (aborted match)
Moscow 1985 Kasparov-Karpov (+5 -3 =16)
London - Leningrad 1986 Kasparov-Karpov (+5 -4 =15)
Seville 1987 Kasparov-Karpov (+4 -4 =16)
New York - Lyon 1990 Kasparov-Karpov (+4 -3 =17)

They also had a battle for the GMA World Cup series (1988-9) which was won by a small margin by Kasparov over 6 tournaments. They were unrivalled as the top two players for about a decade. Even after this, even though Karpov clearly wasn't world number two he held the governing body FIDE's World Championship 1993-1999 after Kasparov organised his own world title events. He also won the Linares 1994 by a big margin over Kasparov which he used to suggest he was the real champion. I've always thought Karpov was a little lucky in this tournament, there was some appalling play from some of his opponents (I remember particularly that Bareev's play in the ending of his game against Karpov, even at this number of years after, was spectacularly bad) which explains much of the margin of victory.

Apparently there were long negotiations over the match and offers from two other European cities and one in South America. Kasparov has been retired since 2005, devoting his time to opposing the Russian goverment and especially Vladimir Putin. He has always been open to playing exhibition events and I don't expect this will mark a return to top level chess. Karpov is in danger of falling out of the world's top 100 and doesn't seem to have worked on his game for a long time. In spite of all this the match should get a lot of publicity in the mainstream press. I believe Kasparov is the favourite, not least on the grounds of age, Kasparov is 46, Karpov 58. I wonder if at least in part Kasparov has in mind his only match loss to Karpov, the x3dworld rapid match in New York in 2002 which Karpov won 2.5-1.5. Since then they have played just three blitz tournament games, (one in Reykjavik 2004 and two in Zurich 2006) all drawn.

6) Greek League

The Greek League took place in Kallithea 3rd-11th July 2009. The tournament is 9 round swiss 31 teams.

Spiros Ilandzis reports: The Greek League ended with a victory for the team of S.O. Kavalas, for the 4th time in its history (previous wins: 1999, 2005 and 2008)

Unfortunately, the top two matches of the last round ended in 6-6, after a "package agreement" of 12 draws. The team of S.O. Kavalas had already secured the title, before the last round, having scored 8 wins in its first 8 matches!

Top-players for S.O. Kavalas were: GM Tomashevsky (2689) 4 p. in 7 g., GM Papaioannou (2624) 5/8, GM Halkias (2564) 6/8, GM Skembris (2452) 7,5/9, Ant. Pavlidis (2360) 8.5/9! and WGM Botsari (2298) 6,5/9.

21) GM Berlin

There was a GM tournament in Berlin 4th-12th July 2009. Viktor Erdos won the event with 8/11.

I don't like pre-arranged results of games, I especially don't like pre-arranged games. Perhaps there was a reason Elisabeth Paehtz and Raj Tischbierek wanted to draw, maybe they're friends or maybe one of them was ill or perhaps there was a dispute with the organisers. But their game from round 8 was in my view a total disgrace and most certainly broke this rule of chess: "12.1 The players shall take no action that will bring the game of chess into disrepute." and possibly others (I couldn't find it but I'm sure I read somewhere FIDE were cracking down or pre-arranged results, and results such as the match draws that occur in Olympiads or this week in the final round of the Greek Teams). If I had been an arbiter I would have double defaulted the pair of them. It was, if you wish to look, a self created stalemate in 12, it certainly wasn't a game of chess. Ugly.

32) 4th Polonia Wroclaw International

The 4th Polonia Wroclaw International took place 20th-26th June 2009. Sergei Tiviakov won on tie-break from Bartosz Socko, Vadim Malakhatko, Csaba Balogh, Evgeny Postny, Vladimir Baklan, Mateusz Bartel and Bertlomiej Macieja after they all finished on 6.5/9. The players in the tie that drew in the final round then played off again (repeatedly if necessary) for the full point producing the table below. I'm sorry for the confusion over the last few weeks but this really is a very odd system.

ChessCube (http://www.ChessCube.com), a South African Internet Chess Company, is the sponsor of the 2009 SA Open, being held in Cape Town 3rd-11th July 2009.

The event attracted players from all over the world, but a new twist is that three remote players have participated via the Internet from a venue in Melbourne, Australia. Mark Levitt, the CEO of ChessCube, says, "ChessCube has worked closely with FIDE (the World Chess Federation), to construct a series of rules and procedures to be followed, so that for the first time in chess history, Internet games would be officially rated."

Amon Simutowe won with 9.5/11 half a point clear of Gawain Jones.

Zuerich Chess Club 200th Anniversary

Visit the official website look at a quiz with information contained in Richard Forster's recently published book "Schachgesellschaft Zürich: 1809 bis 2009" the prize of playing in a Simul against a chess legend.

Dr. Christian Rohrer reports: The world's oldest chess club celebrates its 200th year with spectacular jubilee events, including World Champions Spassky, Kasparov and Anand.

The Schachgesellschaft Zuerich celebrates 200th anniversary with spectacular jubilee events.

The Schachgesellschaft Zuerich, the world's oldest chess club, celebrates its 200th year in 2009 with spectacular jubilee events. To mark the anniversary, some of the greatest masters of the last five decades, including World Champions Spassky, Kasparov and Anand, will play at the event. Highlights will be a simultaneous exhibition and a rapid chess tournament on the 22nd and 23rd of August, held in Zurich Main Railway Station. With generous sponsor support from Credit Suisse the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich continues its long standing tradition of world class chess tournaments.

On Saturday the 22nd of August, in simultaneous games 200 amateurs will be honoured to face eight word-class chess players, who have made historical contributions to world chess over the last 50 years: Viswanathan Anand, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Viktor Korchnoi, Vladimir Kramnik, Boris Spassky, Ruslan Ponomariov and Veselin Topalov. On Sunday the 23rd of August, these champions will compete against each other in an exciting rapid chess format. Judit Polgar, the strongest female chess player ever, and Werner Hug of Schachgesellschaft Zuerich, former world junior chess champion, will replace Kasparov and Spassky, who have retired from competitive chess.

A huge number of spectators, from enthusiasts to the generally curious, is expected for the events at Zurich Railway Main Station. And no one need miss it: All commemorative events will be streamed live via Internet.

The jubilee commences with an open tournament; certain to be one of the most exciting open chess tournaments of 2009. Players of every skill level, from beginners to the elite world class, are expected and will be welcomed at the Zurich Kongresshaus from August 9th to the 15th, 2009. They will compete in two tournaments, 9 rounds each, for CHF 100.000 guaranteed prize money and many attractive prizes.

To further honour the occasion, Richard Forster, reputable chess historian, will release his comprehensive book, researched in great detail, on the unique history of the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich. Entitled "Schachgesellschaft Zuerich: 1809 bis 2009", Forster's work will analyze the development of the Schachgesellschaft Zuerich from the times of Napoleon to the present day.
