My thanks to Andrey Terekhov, Dennis Monokroussos, Georgios Souleidis, Gerard Demuydt, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Laszlo Nagy, Ian Reynolds, Robert Fontaine and everyone else who helped with the issue.
It was definitely a case of hold the front page today. Anand only needed a draw to retain his world title but instead he lost. Viswanathan Anand won a second game in a row after last week's issue and took a three point lead which he nursed through to a 6-3 lead, dormie three in golf terms (three up with three to play). Anand dominated the early part of the match so completely there were thoughts about Kramnik's current abilities. However it seems that Anand's domination was mostly due to his superb opening preparation putting Kramnik under time pressure because once Kramnik started to get some prep in he looked more like his old self. Kramnik has an absolutely great understanding of the game but the one that seems to have gone somewhat is a snap to his tactics and he seems particularly unhappy in unclear positions, something the Soviets used to say about Fischer. Kramnik has played some great tactical games but not so much recently. I think this was the basis of the kind of positions Anand has been steering for. In game 10 Kramnik got a position much more to his taste and brought home the win. Its unlikely he will win with black on Wednesday but I don't suppose Anand will be feeling all that good tonight and if Kramnik can complicate as he did in game 9 (where he missed strong winning chances, again I think that missing tactical snap may be to blame) Anand will definitely feel nervous. We'll have to see. Karpov mentioned he thought 16 games was best for a modern title match, I can't help agreeing, although of course 20 or 24 would be even better! Anyway nomatter what happens it will all be over by next week.
The European Club Cup would normally dominate, or maybe the Bundesliga or the start of Cap D'Agde but its not been that kind of week. The rest of the magazine is probably thinner than it should be. I don't know if I've missed a lot but this is all I have time for this week.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark

Do you have an FIDE rating?
Dr. Robert Howard of the University of New South Wales in Australia is carrying out a study of chess skill in internationally rated players. The study looks at effects of amount of practice, coaching and age of starting chess on chess skill and at chess players' views about chess skill. The study involves a short online survey. The survey is for anyone who has, or who ever has had, an FIDE rating.
The survey takes only about 5-10 minutes to complete. All responses are completely confidential. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Russian, and German.
To take part, you must know your exact FIDE ID number, which will be something like "14200887". ID numbers are posted on the FIDE website at http://www.fide.com
A summary and analysis of the study findings will be posted here when it is complete and will be emailed to any participant who requests it.
If you would like to participate, please go to this website: http://education.arts.unsw.edu.au/fidestudy/

The line ups for the FIDE Grand Prix events have been announced. The top four players in the world, along with players such as Morozevich and Shirov are missing. It seems that in the case of Kramnik and Topalov that they believe that the event doesn't have big enough prize money (according to quotes in Chess Today). All this was more or less known beforehand. However the players who have signed up make this a very attractive and interesting series of events. The grand prix is organised by Global Chess which is headed by Bessel Kok.

Etienne Bacrot has a website at: http://www.chess22.fr/ with his analysis and news. Very worth while, especially when he's playing.
Mats Luthman has written a program that connects to ICC and FICS, compatable with many modern mobile phones. I've been looking for something like this for a while for watching live tournaments if I'm out and about. Its a nice free solution, you can also play but I haven't tried that.
