1) Introduction

My thanks to Bela Lengyel, Steve Giddins, Herman Van de Wynkele, Dennis Monokroussos, Luis Scalise, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Miklos Orso, Spiros Ilandzis, Chris Bird, George Mirijanian, Boris Zlender, Gerard Demuydt, Lubomir Ftacnik, John Henderson, Patricia Claros Aguilar, Haroon Or Rashid, Imre Fancsy and everyone else who helped with the issue.

After some months of uncertain results Levon Aronian played himself into form just in time for the Grand Slam in Bilbao. He took clear first place in Sochi with 8½/13 half a point clear of Teimour Radjabov. Wang Yue finished in joint 3rd with Gata Kamsky and played some impressive chess along the way. The elite chess continues with the start of the Tal Memorial with Vladimir Kramnik hoping to find some form for his world title challenge against Viswanathan Anand in October. Kramnik got off to a good start by beating Alexei Shirov.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

13) Jirasek Memorial Rakovnik

The Jirasek Memorial took place in Rakovnik 9th-16th August 2008. Petr Neuman edged out Jiri Stocek on tie-break after both finished on 6½/9.

Rakovnik is a small city (pop 17.000) some 60 km west of Prague, but the chess club and traditions are respectable. The city organized championship of Bohemia-Moravia in 1940 (the protectorate during the war, without Slovakia), there was a tournament book about it penned by Karel Opochensky. This year the club celebrated a 100 years of organised chess in Rakovnik and the 20th edition of two smaller opens dedicated to the deceased local chess organizer Jirasek and a category 8 GM event with special guest Vlastimil Hort (born in Kladno, some 40 km away) who gave a lecture. The tournament produced a surprise performance by Petr Neuman (born very close in Jesenice and "chess educated" in Rakovnik), who made his 2nd GM norm. Also Jan Sodoma from Prague made an IM norm. News: Lubo Ftacnik.

15) Acropolis Open

The 23rd Acropolis 2008 International Open Chess Tournament took place in Athens, Greece, 9th-17th August 2008. Ilya Smirin edged out Mircea Parlgras on tie-break after both scored 7/9.

Spiros Ilandzis adds: Israeli Grandmaster Ilia Smirin was the winner of the "Acropolis" international tournament for the second consecutive year. This time he tied for first place with Romanian GM Mircea Parligras, but had superior tie-breaks (average rating of opponents). In the games of the 9th and final round Smirin preferred not to take any risk against Bulgarian GM Atanas Kolev, while Parligras played a quite double-edged game against Moldavian GM Dmitry Svetushkin, which eventually ended in a draw after many adventures.

Half a point behind the leaders were Kolev, German GM Alexander Graf (who beat Zubarev in the last rd.) and two female players, Georgian IM Nana Dzagnidze and Armenian IM Elina Danielian, who beat Maric and Kotanjian respectively. Dzagnidze finished third on tie-breaks, while her victory today secured her a (male) grandmaster norm.

21) 83rd Argentine Championship

The 83rd Argentine Championship took place 30th July - 11th August 2008. Anton Kovalyov, Diego Flores and Ruben Felgaer all finished on 8/11. Ruben Felgaer won a rapid (g15+10s/move) playoff amongst these players to take the title. I've tried to reconstruct the playoff, two games are missing and the games round numbers weren't given so there may be errors in the order games were played.

ICC (http://www.chessclub.com/) Press release on the Magnus Carlsen Charity Simul.

Many thanks to ALL in the chess community who rallied to Magnus Carlsen's clarion call to help raise funds for Dusan Popovic, the young Serbian grandmaster urgently in need of medical treatment.

It did indeed turn out to be "Magnanimous" Magnus as the Norwegian teen ace and the Internet Chess Club joined forces last Monday to raise near to $12,000 in the fundraising simultaneous. A big "Thank You" from Magnus Carlsen and ICC to all who donated to the cause!

There were ICC qualifiers for seats in the simul with entry for as little as 5 chekels to play; 6 fixed-price seats were sold on eBay for $500; there were 18 seats sold on eBay in a Dutch auction for $190 each; U.S. shock-jock Howard Stern and Dr. Jim Roberts, of the America's Foundation for Chess paid $1000 to play; the Chess.FM commentary team donated $800; our Spanish partners at CET donated $300; and even World ChampionVishy Anand sent a message of support along with his own personal donation of $750.

Carlsen played 25 games during the fundraiser for Popovic. He won 19, drew 5 and lost only one game. Click here for the pgn download of all 25 games.

3rd NH Chess Tournament

The 3rd NH Chess Tournament takes place in Amsterdam August 20th-30th, 2008. The venue of this clash between 'Rising Stars' and 'Experience' is the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in the centre of the Dutch capital, at a five minutes’ walk from Central Station.

The Experience team consists of: Evgeny Bareev (Russia, 2655), Viktor Kortchnoi (Switzerland, 2602), Artur Jussupow (Germany, 2587), Simen Agdestein (Norway, 2583) and Ljubomir Ljubojevic (Serbia, 2555).

The Rising Stars team consists of Wang Yue (China, 2704), Ivan Cheparinov (Bulgaria, 2687), Fabiano Caruana (Italy, 2630), Daniel Stellwagen (The Netherlands, 2616) and Erwin l’Ami (The Netherlands, 2610).

They play a 'Scheveningen' tournament, which means that each player of one team plays against each of the players of the other team. They do so twice, once with the white pieces and once with the black pieces. However, the Rising Stars may be most interested in the special prize for the player on their team with the highest score: an invitation to the prestigious 2009 Amber Rapid and Blindfold Tournament in Nice.

The rounds start at 13.30 hrs (except for the last round on August 30, which starts at noon; August 25 is a free day) and every day there is expert commentary for the public. Admission is free.

Chess Study

Do you have an FIDE rating?

Dr. Robert Howard of the University of New South Wales in Australia is carrying out a study of chess skill in internationally rated players. The study looks at effects of amount of practice, coaching and age of starting chess on chess skill and at chess players' views about chess skill. The study involves a short online survey. The survey is for anyone who has, or who ever has had, an FIDE rating.

The survey takes only about 5-10 minutes to complete. All responses are completely confidential. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Russian, and German.

To take part, you must know your exact FIDE ID number, which will be something like "14200887". ID numbers are posted on the FIDE website at http://www.fide.com

A summary and analysis of the study findings will be posted here when it is complete and will be emailed to any participant who requests it.

If you would like to participate, please go to this website: http://education.arts.unsw.edu.au/fidestudy/

FIDE Grand Prix Events

The line ups for the FIDE Grand Prix events have been announced. The top four players in the world, along with players such as Morozevich and Shirov are missing. It seems that in the case of Kramnik and Topalov that they believe that the event doesn't have big enough prize money (according to quotes in Chess Today). All this was more or less known beforehand. However the players who have signed up make this a very attractive and interesting series of events. The grand prix is organised by Global Chess which is headed by Bessel Kok.

ICC and FICS client for mobile phones

Mats Luthman has written a program that connects to ICC and FICS, compatable with many modern mobile phones. I've been looking for something like this for a while for watching live tournaments if I'm out and about. Its a nice free solution, you can also play but I haven't tried that.
