My thanks to Michael Langer, Fred Lucas, Nebojsa Baralic, George Mirijanian, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Patricia Claros Aguilar, Anton Mihailov, Arthur F Brameld, Ian Rogers and everyone else who helped with the issue.
A very busy week of chess with the FIDE World Cup Blitz following on from the Tal Memorial with a stellar field. Vassily Ivanchuk reasserted his good form by taking clear first from Viswanathan Anand after beating him in the final round. Anand followed this up with a draw against Vladimir Kramnik in an Advanced Chess Rapid match whilst most of the rest of the blitz players made their way to Khanty-Mansiysk to play in the World Chess Cup. There were few real shocks in round one 19th seed Pavel Eljanov, 25th, Konstantin Landa, 32nd, Pentala Harikrishna, 39th, Emil Sutovsky and 42nd seed and former World Championships Challenger Nigel Short (strangely after or perhaps because of his opponent arriving late) were the main casualties. The real business is yet to come.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark

The new US Chess League took place August 27th - October 31st 2007. Boston beat New York in the first semi-final. Dallas beat Miami in the second. Games are played on ICC. My thanks to Greg Shahade.
Final lineups (November 28th 2007) [from the official site]
Board 1 - IM Drasko Boskovic vs GM Larry Christiansen: Boskovic is coming off a fantastic win against GM Julio Becerra, earning him the game of the week award. He will need to conjure up more of this magic to beat Christiansen. Christiansen has played a very strong field this season, winning two games and drawing the rest, and will actually be facing his lowest rated opponent of the season in Boskovic. Board 2 - SM Jorge Sammour Hasbun vs IM Davorin Kuljasevic: Both of these players are playing ridiculously well in 2007. Jorge has an amazing 5.5/6 score so far, while Davorin has an even better score at 6.5/7. These two are clearly the front runners for the first spot on the 2nd Board All Star Team, and this game may decide who receives this honor. It should be an action packed match between two lightning hot opponents. Click here for an interview with IM Kuljasevic. Board 3- IM Jacek Stopa vs NM Denys Shmelov: We have another matchup of potential all stars on Board 3, with the winner of this game having a good shot to make the first team for Board 3. Stopa was the on the 1st All Star team in 2006 for Board 2, and was able to drop down to Board 3 this season. Needless to say he's doing very well, with a record of three wins and two draws. Shmelov has been performing very well as well, going through the regular season undefeated, and suffering his only loss to IM Jay Bonin in the Semifinal match. Board 4- NM Chris Williams vs WFM Bayaraa Zorigt: Williams has been awesome in 2007, with a record of 6 wins and 2 losses. Zorigt has had an up and down season with an even record for the year. The numbers say that Williams has the edge, but Zorigt has faced and defeated many higher rated players than Williams in her career and Dallas fans are hoping that she can do it again. Click here to watch Chris Williams celebrate after Boston's Semifinal victory.

The 6th edition of Gibraltar's Gibtelecom Chess Festival will be held from 22nd-31st January 2008 at the Caleta Hotel, one of Gibraltar's best hotels. In previous years players of the quality of Alexei Shirov, Michael Adams and Nigel Short have played in the Masters section. Usually the Masters field includes at least 30 grandmasters. In 2008 the first prize in the Masters has gone up to £12,000 and the tournament is so strong at the top that it even offers a £2,000 prize for the best score by a player rated under 2600 (we think that might be unique worldwide) as well as the same amount for other rating categories down to sub-2200. There is also big money to be won in the Under 2250 (£1,500 first prize) and Under 1850 (£1,000 first prize) events. Even the relatively light-hearted evening events (which cost nothing to enter) have a combined prize fund of £1,200.
