So its all over. Viswanathan Anand finally became undisputed World Chess Champion and at the same time took himself to over 2800 again and clear first in the rating list. There are few more popular players than Anand but also few more deserving given the quality of his performances over the last 15 years. I doubt anyone will begrudge him the title.
Anand's career has been one of stellar tournament results scarred by a World Championship mess that was not of his making and which I think for a period of time did affect him before he decided to stop worrying about it and just play chess. The problem created by Kasparov and FIDE was visited as heavily on his house as anyone's and that as much as Kasparov complained about his struggle to the world title and the called off match in 1984, Anand had it at least as bad because of the anarchy that followed the split. I'm sure that there are those who wouldn't even recognise Anand now because he didn't win the title through a match but this event was as much of a test as any recent match and we have to remember Kramnik unified the title on a rapid playoff, hardly the traditional method either. The point is the players are signed up to the new era and we can go forward. We really are now in the post-Kasparov period, especially as he has moved on to politics and this week announced he will run for the President of Russia in opposition to Vladimir Putin.
I do still disagree with the method FIDE are using to create challengers. The World Cup is a failed format, a sprawling media-unfriendly mess. I look at the latest rating list and see 22 players over 2700, the new Candidates class, not many more than that should be anywhere near a world championship shot especially given that in Mexico City we already saw a huge divide even amongst players in the top 14 in the world. 128 players is way too many, by all means have a qualifier to produce a few extra places but basically if you can't get in the top 20 why should you think you should be a challenger? [Of course the FIDE KO event did produce different world champions but that was the entire problem for me, far too much luck was involved mostly brought about by a mean schedule and ridiculous time rate to incorporate too many players in the first place. ] Then in the future we will have a Grand Prix (the series will span a period of two years with one tournament every year in America, Asia and Europe) about which precious little concrete has emerged.
What we do have coming up is a match between Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik next year. This event should be huge and have no trouble attracting great sponsorship and publicity. We're lucky that the right match has emerged at exactly the right time. I would actually hope that the interest is so great that they can agree to play more than the 12 games scheduled (cost shouldn't be a factor) which I think as is will be a bit short to satisfactorily separate the players. The match is to be promoted by Universal Event Promotion and I would imagine that Indian companies will be queuing up to sponsor the match (I imagine it won't be in India but as a new worldwide business force I wouldn't imagine that would be too much of a problem) and I certainly hope it won't be in the back end of beyond as Kramnik - Topalov was. Kramnik fancies his chances pointing out that he has lost just one game in the last 15 months, but he also accepted Anand had only lost two and that this will be a real challenge for both of them. The only reason I can see not to look forward to the match would be the Petroff Defence, but its precisely in title matches such as these that chess ideas move forward. After that Topalov will play the winner of the World Cup and in turn there will be another World Title match. The winners at the end of all this will have written new pages in chess history.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The World Chess Championship Tournament took place in Mexico City 13th-30th September 2007.
Viswanathan Anand led by a point after 9 rounds when we left it last week and by virtue of a win against Alexander Morozevich in round 10 and the rest being draws he led by a point when he took the title after the 14 rounds. Anand had one truely bad scare in the final rounds when he ran into bad trouble against Alexander Grischuk, in fact its nearly certain the Russian missed at least a couple of winning opportunities but Anand did defend very stubbornly to hold the draw.
Vladimir Kramnik won two out of his last three games at least laying to rest concerns about his fitness. His loss against Alexander Morozevich from a better opening cost him even a shot at retaining his title in the event. Kramnik caught Boris Gelfand in the final round and they both tied on 8/11.
Boris Gelfand had a tremendous tournament. He came prepared, had a game plan (gone were the interesting Najdorf's in its place was the stultifying Petroff) played round to round and scored three wins and only one loss (to tail ender Alexander Grischuk, ah what could have been). The consumate professional showed what you have to do to maximise your results. I've always said the big loser of the Kasparov-Short breakaway in 1993 and the eventual collapse of the Candidates Matches system was Boris Gelfand, I just can't imagine the number of matches he would have won if the old system had remained in place.
Peter Leko finished in 4th place on 50% he was never in contention but had one or two good moments.
With a final round win (when he put entirely down to brilliant preparation by his second Motylev) Peter Svidler moved into 5th place. This was an extremely undistinguished event for Svidler with a lot of errors according to the player himself so a -1 score can almost be called a victory in that sense. He stated that he wasn't enjoying the chess he played in the first half of the event and certainly seemed to play a little better in the second half with more enterprising stuff.
Alexander Morozevich always adds to the excitement of an event but his terribly variable standard of play meant that he enlivened things as much with his losses as his wins but his win against Kramnik obviously had a huge effect on the tournament.
Big things have been predicted for Levon Aronian for the last couple of years but this must have been a horribly chastening tournament for him. He looked tired and resigned long before the end, basically its back to the drawing board on opening preparation and he also mentioned fitness, he has the talent but has had his deficiencies pointed out to him in no uncertain terms. Perhaps its no coincidence that the youngest two players finished at the bottom and the oldest three at the top.
Just like Aronian, Grischuk's openings were a complete disaster (Here is what he had to say after the final game in what was just a long line of really entertaining press quotes "To take it as my 5th loss with black in a row - I mean its so disgusting - Probably my preparation was terrible. 90% of my time I spent on openings and variations that not only didn't occur in any of my games here but in no games of anybody's.") he was in time trouble in almost every game and if he'd drawn the five games with black he lost he'd have finished tied for second (three of them could have been Petroffs). But perhaps this is unreasonable, perhaps with all the preparation required to play chess these days the prediction that the future belongs to the young is just wrong, maybe it takes years to establish a repertoire and to learn how to maintain and improve it. Its worth thinking about with the top two players in the world being born in 1969 and Ivanchuk's success certainly being due in part to the bewildering array of good opening ideas he has at his disposal.

The October FIDE rating list see's Anand confirmed as world number 1 and his rating rises to 2801 after his performances in Dortmund and Mexico City. FIDE confirmed half way through the World Championship in Mexico City that they would rate that event. They have a policy that FIDE events will appear in the first possible rating list and it was obviously easy to squeeze such a small event (with only 8 players not the magnitude of importance) in at the last moment. To have left it out would have made the new list pretty worthless. Vassily Ivanchuk has seen a continuation of the rise which has seen his rating increase 46 points in the year and keeps alive the question as to whether he is actually the best player in the world right now, its a terrible shame he missed out on the current world championship cycle although his nerves in the world championships of the past wouldn't have guaranteed him being any factor at all in Mexico. Its interesting that after all the attention on the young talent in the world that we see two players aged 38 at the top alongside Boris Gelfand at 39 sharing second in Mexico. Alekhine used to say 37 was the peak of a chess players' career (a balance of combinative ability and experience) maybe nothing has changed? Vladimir Kramnik is just a couple of points behind Ivanchuk gaining 16 points at Dortmund and Mexico and should also be heading towards new heights having overcome recent health problems. These three players seem well clear of the rest at the moment with Topalov falling between the chasing pack and the top after a year of declining results, it will be interesting to see what happens when he plays again.
Veselin Topalov has dropped a couple of places in spite of not playing at all. Further down Radjabov has gained a place in spite of losing four points in the period. Shirov takes over Dmitry Jakovenko's place after the latter dropped back down to his April level. This is the only change to the composition of the top 10 players in the World.
Anatoly Karpov returns back to the list in at 43 in the world after a period of inactivity. Sergey Fedorchuk gained 27 points to jump back in at 69 in the world. 6 players drop out of the list as the bottom rating rises 3 points from 2624 to 2627 (Nielsen and Shabalov at 2626 and Efimenko at 2624 who didn't play at all were the main losers in that).
FM Vladimir Afromeev born in 1954 has his performance at the Kotov Memorial (TWIC 662-3) in Tula counted and so moves from 78 to 67 in the world. These events and his rating as a whole are regarded as extremely dubious by many good judges and I'm told there are russian websites saying he openly boasts about how easy it is to get such a high rating.

The 16th Monarch Assurance Isle of Man International took place 22nd September - 30th September 2007. Mateusz Bartel, Vitali Golod, Zahar Efimenko, Yuri Yakovich, Michael Roiz and Mikhail Kobalia tied on 6.5/9. I believe the scores in the table below are correct but I don't have confirmation yet as the official table contained a couple of errors as the time of writing. My thanks to John Saunders.

The 6th edition of Gibraltar's Gibtelecom Chess Festival will be held from 22nd-31st January 2008 at the Caleta Hotel, one of Gibraltar's best hotels. In previous years players of the quality of Alexei Shirov, Michael Adams and Nigel Short have played in the Masters section. Usually the Masters field includes at least 30 grandmasters. In 2008 the first prize in the Masters has gone up to £12,000 and the tournament is so strong at the top that it even offers a £2,000 prize for the best score by a player rated under 2600 (we think that might be unique worldwide) as well as the same amount for other rating categories down to sub-2200. There is also big money to be won in the Under 2250 (£1,500 first prize) and Under 1850 (£1,000 first prize) events. Even the relatively light-hearted evening events (which cost nothing to enter) have a combined prize fund of £1,200.
