My thanks to Olesya Aleynikova, Dario Mione, Gary Suffield, Jan Mazuch, Hugh Brodie, Dave Clayton, Yochanan Afek, Frank K. Berry, Haggai Frank, Alex Yermolinsky, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Ian Rogers, John Donaldson, Peter Boel, Thomas Michos, Darcy Lima, Lennarth Eriksson and everyone else who helped with the issue.
I posed the question at the time of the July FIDE Rating list, who is the best player in the world at the moment? I answered by saying quite possibly Vassily Ivanchuk. He scored his third major tournament win in a row by winning the 8th Montreal International and whilst he must still have some ground to make up he's doing it fast 33 points in the last list and with power to add already. Another amazing player this week is 76 year old Victor Korchnoi who shared first place in Banja Luka, the old warrior keeps going and with this result has given himself some kind of chance to return to the top 100. Also worth watching is whether young star Magnus Carlsen can win the Biel chess Festival which he leads with 4.5/6 with three rounds to go. News came to me this week that Ian Rogers has called it a day in competitive chess, chess can be very stressful and even though he can still play pretty darn well and didn't want to quit, his doctors told him to call it a day before he did himself some long term damage. He'll be missed, although I guess its possible he may be seen at more major tournaments as a reporter.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Mechanics' Institute hosted the 2nd Konig Memorial July 10th-26th 2007 on the Schevingen system - double round robin between the two teams. The time control is 40/75 + SD/15 all with 30 seconds added per move. Because of scheduling issues (Canadian Open and the work schedule of some of the IMs) there weren't really rounds as the games were played as and when they could be fit in. My thanks to Alex Yermolinsky and John Donaldson.

Ian Rogers has retired from competitive chess after over 20 years as Australia's number one player. His last event was the Lidums Checkmate Open 6th-8th July 2007 which he won by defeating IM Andras Toth in the final round to finish on 6/7. He didn't want to retire and is in reasonable health but multiple doctors told him that due to the stress of playing and its affect on blood pressure if he didn't give up chess immediately and permanently, he would be on a dialysis machine within a few years.
