My thanks to Varlam Vepkhvishvili, George Mirijanian, Chirila Radu-Catalin, Fred Lucas, Dario Mione, Mikhail Golubev, Manuel Weeks, Jan Bey, Ching Kim Lye, Christian Sánchez, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Adolivio Capece, Serge Archambault, Haroon Rashid, John Donaldson, John Hillery, Goran Urosevic, Dennis Monokroussos, Dmitry V. Borisenkov, Peter Boel, Miklos Orso, Jan Mazuch, Denis Vretenar, Jonathan Speelman, Doru Ionescu and everyone else who helped with the issue.
Its rare to have such a good week as this. First of all Levon Aronian progressed to Mexico City. Aronian impressed in two tough matches (very tough for a man who was supposed to be top seed), first of all against Magnus Carlsen and then against Alexei Shirov both players who wouldn't have looked out of place in Mexico too. He looks like a serious contender for the world title. Then the day after Alexander Grischuk, who by all reports plays a lot of professional poker these days, progressed against Sergei Rublevsky relatively easily in the playoffs as it turned out. Then there is the Gorenje Valjevo Tournament where Karpov is joint leader playing his first proper tournament in some time. Then also the Kings Tournament Bazna Romania a Category XIII event with some big names from the past. Did I mention the Dutch Championships? We really can't complain.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark
The World Candidates Matches took place May 26th - June 14th, 2007 in Elista, Kalmykia. Each match consisted of six games, and, when necessary, tie-break rapid games. The line up for Mexico City is Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, Peter Svidler and Alexander Morozevich who were already qualified. They are now joined by Peter Leko, Boris Gelfand, Levon Aronian and Alexander Grischuk to make up an eight player field barring any last minute decision to include Topalov. Today the Aerosvit tournament in Foros started today with a number of the candidates and also Peter Svidler.

The "Gorenje 2007" tournament in Valjevo takes place 13th-21st June 2007. Karpov's return is obviously the main point of interest. A decent performance should restore him to the top 40, he currently hasn't played enough games to make the list.
