My thanks to Thomas Henrich, Miklos Orso, Axel Fritz, Varlam Vepkhvishvili, Denis Vretenar, Adolivio Capece, Gary Suffield, Yoav Dothan, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Ching Kim Lye, Amir Bagheri, Csaba Bognár, Emmanuel Variniac, Malcolm Pein, Vasik Rajlich and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The Candidates tournaments are coming to a close with only two matches remaining. Peter Leko has been in indifferent form for some time but he has made short work first of the bottom seed Mikhail Gurevich and secondly and more impressively of Evgeny Bareev. Leko was never in any trouble against Bareev and might have won more easily but he crushed the Russian's Caro-Kann Defence twice in powerful style to book his seat in Mexico City. Boris Gelfand also made pretty short work of Gata Kamsky. Kamsky had looked impressive against Etienne Bacrot but the positions he got out of the opening in that match didn't inspire confidence and Gelfand made Kamsky pay very dearly. One gets the feeling that Kamsky is only back in chess temporarily because he clearly hasn't done any professional work on his openings in a while. His first loss saw him use acres of time and having only 3 minutes for the 19 moves he unsurprisingly dropped the entire position. Gelfand has always been a very tough competitor and whilst he won't be one of the favourites I think he could have a decent score in Mexico. The other two matches will continue to the final game. Levon Aronian has a point lead against Alexei Shirov going into the final game. This has been a tremendously interesting match and Shirov will have one final go with white to try and take the match to the tie-break. Alexander Grischuk dominated his match against Sergei Rublevsky for the first three games and maybe should have been further ahead, then he simply ended up in a bad ending straight out of the opening in game four and the match is up in the air. The short draw he granted with the white pieces suggests that Grischuk might even be on thin ground going into the final game. Lots to look forward to.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
