For me the Candidates Matches in Elista have been an unqualified success. The first series of matches have been tough an uncompromising. The best match in terms of excitement was that between 24 year old Levon Aronian and 16 year old Magnus Carlsen. Aronian is the top seed in this event and so was a little unlucky to draw Magnus Carlsen who was bottom seed 18 months or so ago but clearly wasn't anymore. Aronian was the classier act but he struggled to put away his determined opponent only managing to do so in the blitz playoff. It will take time for Carlsen to put his openings together (a problem that Aronian had until recently) but this match can't have done him any harm at all. Aronian now has to go on to play Alexei Shirov for a place in Mexico City. Shirov came close to elimination but won the final game of normal time rate games against Michael Adams. Shirov then won the first two rapid playoff games to take an unshakable grip. The other second round matches all also look fascinating. Peter Leko takes on Evgeny Bareev. Bareev is the bottom rated player left in the event but that's because he concentrates on teaching these days. His openings looked tremendous against Judit Polgar. Boris Gelfand against Gata Kamsky is a real heavyweight struggle in prospect and cases can be made for either player. Finally Sergei Rublevsky against Alexander Grischuk is another match that looks too close to call. I can't wait.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

One of the most famous German chess clubs 10 time champions SG Koeln-Porz (based in Cologne) has dropped out of the German Bundesliga. Their sponsor of more than forty years, Wilfried Hilgert, doesn´t support the Bundesliga´s move to autonomy from the German federation, which has been amended by all other teams and the federation, too. Porz´s place in the coming season starting October 19 will be taken by SV Muelheim-Nord who finished 13th. Some reactions (in German) can be found at: http://www.schachbundesliga.de
