My thanks to Benny Asman, Sergey Bystrov, Doru Ionescu, Gary Suffield, Philipp Schlosser, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Jeroen Noomen, Martin Bennedik, Goran Urosevic, Boris Yeshan, Adolivio Capece, Otto Buchholz, Miklos Orso, Gérard Demuydt, Robert Fontaine, Jan Mazuch and everyone else who helped with the issue.
Veselin Topalov yet again recovered from a lousy start in a tournament to come back to win. Starting with 0.5/3 he came back to win three games and that proved enough to take first place alone at the MTel tournament. You wonder what he would do in longer tournaments. Topalov is missing both from the Candidates and the later World Championship tournament in Mexico. The Candidates start in Elista later this week and there are some tremendous matches in prospect. I haven't made much of this event so far as I've become heartily fed up of announcing world championship events that haven't taken place, indeed I think more haven't taken place than have in the years I've been doing TWIC. Anyhow these Candidates matches are going to go ahead and they will see 16 players compete for 4 places over two separate matches. It should be a real treat. In addition there are the strong traditional tournaments the Bosnia Sarjevo tournament and Capablanca Memorial.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Vlaidimir Kramnik was the clear winner of the Oscar 2006 which is organised by Alexander Roshal and the Russian magazine 64-Chess Review. Kramnik's win over Topalov in the reunification match made him obviously the clear winner.
Details in Russian: http://www.64.ru/?/ru/news/item=1704
My votes went to 1) Vladimir Kramnik 2) Veselin Topalov 3) Viswanathan Anand 4) Gata Kamsky 5) Peter Svidler 6) Vassily Ivanchuk 7) Alexander Morozevich 8) Magnus Carlson 9) Teimour Radjabov 10) Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. After the top three it my order wasn't very scientific but I was surprised to see Kamsky's performance at MTel wasn't recognised and that he didn't make the top 15. I probably should have included Aronian but 2006 wasn't his best year really and that its performances in 2006 that count not any since when you're asked to vote (in my case in March 2007).
