My thanks to Peter Doggers, Goran Urosevic, Alex Relyea, Dario Mione, Miklos Orso, Jivko Ginchev, Abhijit Kunte, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Nigel Freeman, Roland Kensdale, Jirí Hornícek, Dimitris Skyrianoglou, Dimitar Naydenov, Adolivio Capece and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The MTel Masters has reached its half way point and the leader is Shakhriyar Mamedyarov who is half a point clear of Michael Adams. Mamedyarov was catapulted into the top 10 in January but hasn't had the chance to show what he can do at the elite level before now. Its also clear that his chess has improved extremely impressively in the last year and that he has a good chance of keeping his place at the top table something that perhaps didn't look quite so likely before. Veselin Topalov again got off to a poor start in a tournament but a win in round 4 gives him some hope that he can still challenge as he is well known for his strings of wins once he gets going. The Sarajevo tournament starts on the 18th so hopefully we'll see some really good chess next week.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark
The MTel Masters take place in Sofia 9th-20th May 2007. The field for the ten round, double round robin event, is Veselin Topalov, Liviu Dieter Nisipeanu, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Gata Kamsky, Michael Adams and Krishnan Sasikiran. Tiebreak games will be played to decide the winner in the case of a tie. The Sofia draw Rule will be strictly applied. The players will not be allowed to offer draws, the decision as to whether the game is sterile is taken by the Chief-Arbiter.
As a warm up Veselin Topalov plays blindfold against Italian Alex Brunetti on May 8th 2007 in Sofia Hall of Grand Hotel Sofia. Alex Brunetii won the prize for "Play like Topalov" that took place during M-Tel Masters. The arbiter will start the clocks at 19:30. The two players will have half an hour each for the game.
