Esquivel Gólcher, Miklos Orso, Martin Borriss, Holger Lieske, Mathias Morin, Brian Stephenson, Frédéric Garcia, Peter Boll and everyone else who helped with the issue.
A good week with some exciting chess not least in Malmo where the traditional Sigeman & Co is taking place and being led by ELO favourite Ivan Cheparinov and in Gausdal where Magnus Carlsen stars in a very mixed category XII event. We have Kramnik and Leko's rapid match to look forward to next week.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The 8th Individual European Chess Championships took place 2-16 April, 2007, in the International Congress Center, Dresden (Germany). 11 rounds Swiss system, 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one. Vladislav Tkachiev won the tie-breaks beating Ivan Cheparinov (1.5-0.5) Dmitry Jakovenko (1.5-0.5) and Emil Sutovsky 2-0 in the final. Sutovsky reached the final by beating Konstantin Sakaev (1.5-0.5) and Dusko Pavasovic (1.5-0.5). Corrections from last week: Beat Zueger - Yukasin (6) Tiviakov - Prusikin (6)
Initially there were 33 qualifiers announced but then this was reduced to 29 as some players had qualified from 2006 including Mikhail Gurevich and Arkadij Naiditsch. 34 non-prequalified players with 7,5 points for 29-7=22 places in the cup, the top 10 by median Buchholz went for free: Volokitin, Gustafsson, Tomashevsky, Almasi, Malakhov, Galkin, Laznicka, Nisipeanu, Nevednichy, Landa. The remaining 24 matched for 12 places. Link: Qualified: Volkov, Vitiugov, Eljanov, Avrukh, Roiz, Iljushin, Motylev, Markus, Tiviakov, Socko, Najer, Gajewski. (info: http://rankzero.de/)
Tiebreak games now largely available. My thanks to Holger Lieske for sending them. I tried to sort them out so that the round numbers made the event followable but its possible I mixed some rapid and blitz games.

Alexei Barsov (2521) drew with Romain Edouard (2446) in a match in Chalons en Champagne 17th to 21st April 2007. The match was organised by
Diego Salazar who also organised the first phase of the French Top 16 League event and hopes to organise further short matches involving young French players under the banner of DEFI (challenge in French).
For the very 1st DEFI the two selected players were the young French IM (16 years old 2447 Elo) current European Champion U 16 and the experienced GM Alexei Barsov (41 years old 2521 Elo) Uzbekistan champion 2006. The match consisted of four classical games (1h40/40 moves + 40 KO with 30 bonus per move). It was organized in one of the lounges of the city hall of Fagnières, a town of approximately 5.000 inhabitants, located near Châlons-en-Champagne and Reims, a worldwide famous area because of the Champagne production.
After four draws the match ended 2-2 and according the rules of the DEFI they had to play a tie-break consisting of two games with 15 + 10 seconds per player. In the First game, Barsov, playing Black, repeated the Burn variation of the French. Romain Edouard deviated from the match with 0-0-0 but very soon made a blunder and was crushed. In the second game the French prodigy demonstrated that he was not a flash in the pan. He regrouped all his energy and scored the full point to equalize once more. So it was necessary to play an ultimate tie-break consisting of one blitz with Armagedon rule. Playing White Alexei Barsov got 6 minutes and had to win at any cost. His position became desperate and he was on the verge of losing when his opponent lost on time! So Alexei Barsov was declared winner of the first DEFI.

George Mirijanian reports: The 17th Massachusetts Game/60 Championship took place on 22nd April 2007 at the Kennedy Senior Center in Natick, Mass., USA. In a big surprise, Sherif Khater, a U.S. Chess Federation-rated expert from Nashua, New Hampshire, emerged the winner with a perfect score of 4-0 in an Open section field of 32 players. GM Alexander Ivanov of Newton, Mass., the pre-tournament heavy favorite, finished in second place with a 3.5-0.5 tally and gained the Mass. Game/60 Championship title by virtue of being the state's high-scoring player. FM John Curdo of Auburn, Mass., who nicked Ivanov for a draw in the first round, won the top Under 2300 prize with a 2.5-1.5 result. The event drew a total of 95 players in four sections and awarded nearly #3,000 in prizes. R. Kenneth Ballou of Framingham, Mass., directed the tournament for the sponsoring Masachusetts Chess Association (MACA) and was assisted by Robert Messenger of Nashua, New Hampshire. A couple of letters arrived this week about the cost and standards of the accommodation in Dresden.
Where did our money go? Erik van den Doel Leiden 17th April 2007
This is a story about the disappearance of money
During the European Chess Championship in Dresden I stayed in the IBIS hotel. The European Chess Union had done the participants an offer: Full board in a single room in the IBIS hotel during 14 nights for 98 Euros a night. Payment could not be done directly to the hotel. The National federations had to transfer the money to the bank account of the European Chess Union (ECU). They would then pay IBIS. This is an important point to understand what happened. Many players made use of this arrangement, of my federation alone they were: GM Tiviakov, GM Smeets GM Werle and myself.
Lunch and dinner in the hotel were extremely poor. Both in terms of quality and quantity. Our complaints to the waiters did not have any effect. After some seven days I spoke to the cook. He told me he couldnt change the situation since he had been ordered to prepare meals for the players for value of five euros. And indeed five euros average seems like a good indication for what we got, although it could also have been less.
Now it was time for some calculation. We paid 98 Euros. The normal rate for a single room including breakfast (Which could, for example, be found on a billboard next to the entrance) is 70,50 euros. 98-70,50 = 27,50 euros left for lunch and dinner. Lunch and dinner together had a value of ten euros so 27,50 -10= 17,50 euros per person per day disappeared! That is 245 euros per person for the whole stay.
By now we had grown very curious how much ECU had actually paid IBIS. The manager of IBIS refused to tell us, saying this was something between the players and the organisers. Then I spoke with the organiser in charge of these matters, mister Verleger. He also refused to tell me. One gets the impression there was something to hide.
I think the national federations whose players stayed in the IBIS should claim a decent refund from ECU.
Furthermore in the future national federations should transfer money directly to hotels and not through ECU, or any other organisation. And if they must, they should ask for written guarantees /specifications where the money will go. Otherwise history may well repeat itself, for example during the 2008 Olympiad, in Dresden.
GM Erik van den Doel Leiden Holland
Boris Kutin response 23rd April 2007
"This is a response to the Open Letter from GM Erik van den Doel concerning the European Individual Championships 2007 in Dresden published on the TWIC Site and elsewhere.
His complaint is about the cost and quality of food in the IBIS Hotel.
He does not mention the fact that this was the most successful ever European Championship with the highest ever prize fund of 250,000 Euros which was played in excellent conditions but chess organisers are, of course, used to hearing only negative comments from some quarters.
He alleges that the ECU received the money for the hotel accommodation, infers that ECU received a commission from these payments and negotiated with the hotels a low standard of meals. None of this is true nor were these allegations raised with me whilst in Dresden which I would have thought would be an elementary courtesy before publishing an Open Letter attacking the ECU.
The facts are:
1. There was no stipulation that players had to stay in any designated hotel. They were free to choose and to make their own arrangements direct with any hotel of which there are many in Dresden with a wide range of prices.
2. The Organising Committee (of which the ECU is not part - we only sanction the event) negotiated deals with hotels which players could either take up or not as they wished.
3. No payments for hotel accommodation were made through the ECU nor did the ECU receive any commission.
A retraction by Erik would be appreciated.
Boris Kutin President ECU"
