1) Introduction

My thanks to Vasik Rajlich, Dmitry V. Borisenkov, Christophe Philippe, George Mirijanian, Csaba Bognár, Thomas Henrich, Frank Berry, Chris Bird, Alfonso Vilches, Ian Rogers, Oscar de la Riva, Valery Maes, Joaquim De Deus Fº, Richard Reich, Nigel Freeman and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The Morelia half of the Linares tournament has been completed and the players now travel back to the home of the tournament to complete the event. The winner of the event is still very hard to predict. Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen lead on 4.5/7 half a point clear of Vassily Ivanchuk. Anand is the joint leader without playing anywhere near his best but this start may allow him to kickstart his best chess. The youngster Magnus Carlsen has had his fair share of luck but is obviously playing better than in his first two super GM events. If anything Vassily Ivanchuk is looking the most impressive, the last minute entry pressed too hard against Magnus Carlsen and has had a couple of time scrambles but he is a class act. World number one Veselin Topalov won an extremely wild game against Alexander Morozevich wherer the latter looked to be pressing before collapsing on the run up to first time control. Last year Topalov had a similar poor start and stormed back in the Linares leg, we'll have to see if that happens this year. Its all to play for starting on March 2nd. Its a relief for me, first time control at 1:30am and finishes up to 4:30am haven't really done much for my sleep, but its good for chess to have a strong event on the other side of the Atlantic.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

7) V Meurthe et Moselle in Nancy Festival

The 5th international Chess Festival of Meurthe et Moselle in Nancy (France) took place 19th-25th February 2007.

Christophe Philippe reports: 130 players competed over 9 rounds and one week in 13 groups of 10 players each. The beautiful playing hall was in "Conseil Général de Meurthe et Moselle", the official building of the department. Group A was for GM-norms (average 2489) and only the ukrainian IM Sikula achieved it with 6/9. GM Namig Guliyev from Azerbaidjan crushed the tournament being always on the lead and finishing calmy with two draws and 7/9. Iranian GM Moradiabadi finished 3rd with 5,5/9. Indian GM Sandipan suffered a terrible tournament but fight back to win the 2 last rounds. The local FM Nicolas Brunner achieved an unnecessary 4th IM-norm with 4/9. Group B was for IM-norms (average 2315) but no player could achieve the necessary 6 or 6,5 points. FM Bouhallel could do it but lost terribly the last round against the weakest elo. Russian IM Gladyshev crushed the tournament with 8/9 ! He wins a place in the GM-group of next year. The group C was very interesting with 10 players over 2200 elo, killing themselves for 2 places in IM-group of next year. Finally an old french player and writter, Alain Fayard played like a young gun and achieved 7,5/9. Delorme is second with 7/9 and take the other ticket for 2008-B group. Next year, about same dates for 6th chess festival...

The III South American Championship U20 took place 2nd-11th February 2007 in Buenos Aires. Sandro Mareco won the event with 7/9. Some of the ratings given in the official standings are different to the rating list I have, also it says its the 2006 championships, I don't know whether that's an error or if the event is just late.

12) OCF Winter NAO FIDE Open

The 2007 OCF Winter NAO FIDE Open Was held in Stillwater, Oklahoma USA with a 7-SS format over 3 days (2-3-2). 111 players from many federations and over a dozen states competed. (25 players were from Texas and 35 from host state Oklahoma) The clear winner with 6 points was GM Vaseliy Aveskulov from the Ukraine playing in his first USA event. He rode the bus down from Omaha, Nebraska. Many titled players drove the 4 hours up from the Univ of Texas at Dallas to play. They included IM Vavrak, GM Panchanathan, IM Zivanic and WFM Doibani. Time control was G-100 + 20 sec. The event was organized by the Oklahoma Chess Foundation and games were collected by Monroi with the help of Chris Bird of Boston. Jerry Hanken was present from Los Angeles to write an article on the event for USCF’s Chess Life Magazine. Frank Berry, Jim Berry, Pieta Garrett and Chris Bird helped directed the event. My thanks to Frank Berry for this report and to Chris Bird for collecting the games.

20) 23rd Bermuda Open

The 23rd Bermuda Open took place at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel from the 9th to 11th February. It was sponsored by Nick Faulks, arbitered by Carol Jarecki and organised by Nigel Freeman. This weekend event gives players a chance for a part FIDE rating as there is a very good chance of playing at least three FIDE rated players in the five rounds. US players, who do not get much chance of FIDE ratings, are taking advantage of this and William Carroll made his third part rating to be on the next FIDE rating list.
