My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Jean-Christophe Basaille, Thomas Henrich, Laszlo Nagy, Vretenar Denis, Sergey Shipov, Peter Doggers, Teimour Radjabov, Adolivio Capece, George Mirijanian, Miklos Orso, Rolf Behovits, Pascal Villalba and everyone else who helped with the issue.
If you'd asked me last week to predict who might be the early leaders of the Morlelia - Linares tournament then I certainly wouldn't have come up with the names Vassily Ivanchuk and Magnus Carlsen yet there they are on 1.5/2. Vassily Ivanchuk wasn't in the event this time last week but he came in as a last minute replacement for Teimour Radjabov. At this distance its hard to know what to make of Radjabov's press release (below in the tournament section) but he doesn't strike me as a man for a frivolous complaint. The loss of his laptop and data was obviously a severe blow to him. Ivanchuk is a fine replacement, his chess can be a bit up and down but there are few stronger on his day. In round 1 he only had a second left when he forced a repetition and his eccentric clock handling has been one of his biggest problems in recent years. Ivanchuk then went on to beat world number one Veselin Topalov in a strange game where he seemed to be winning, then let Topalov back into the game a little before Topalov blundered an entire piece on the final move before time control. Carlsen is the youngest player in the event and in some minds not ready for this event. Yet there are few who have a brigher future predicted for them. Magnus Carlsen defeated Alexander Morozevich in the first round, a player who is something of a "customer" for him with this win making it 3.5/4. In the second round Levon Aronian made a speculative piece sacrifice which Carlsen came very close to refuting (he missed a decisive idea at the end of a line) before allowing a draw by repetition. The rest of the chess has been OK without being spectacular but I expect things to warm up now. The Aeroflot Open is producing some tremendous chess as befits this strong open. The winner plays Dortmund joining Viswanathan Anand, Magnus Carlsen, Boris Gelfand, Vladimir Kramnik, Peter Leko, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Arkadij Naiditsch as has been announced this week (see press release in the forthcoming events section).
Hope you enjoy this issue.

There was a shock on the run up to the event with Teimour Radjabov withdrawing from the event after the theft of his laptop and backups of his databases. He was quickly replaced by Vassily Ivanchuk.
Radjabovs OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE 16th Feb 2007
It is with sincere regret that I must withdraw from the Morelia/Linares 2007 chess tournament. A recent crime incident involving my father and I, which occurred on February 10th in Patzcuaro, Mexico, only a few days before the start of the tournament has forced me to withdraw from the competition and return home. The tragic circumstances which occurred surrounding the criminal act is as follows.
The Mexican Organizers of Morelia/Linares 2007 instructed the participants to acclimatize from travel in the small city of Patzcuaro, Mexico. I came very well prepared and completely ready to play in this tournament for first prize. Unknown to my father-coach or me, Patzcuaro is a very high crime rated town. On the evening of February 10th, my father-coach and I went to have a very quick dinner. Returning to our room within 30 minutes, we found my fathers door open, lock broken, and the room completely in disorder and searched. Upon investigation, many important and valuable items for us, were stolen which pertain both to my professional chess career and my father`s professional activity.
Due to the very fast nature of the burglary and the specific valuable items which were stolen, it is felt that this crime was carefully planned and pre-arranged by the local criminals. We immediately asked for assistance and reported the crime, but received absolutely no help at all from the local authorities, not even a police investigation.
This crime incident has greatly affected both my father and I. In particular, I have not been able to sleep for several days and have certainly not be able to continue my preparation for such a high level chess competition. We have received no support from any of the authorities or Mexican organizers, and feel that no one even slightly cared what happened to us and that had we arrived back to the room a few minutes earlier, my father and I could have been shot or even killed by bandits.
Therefore, I requested reparation for the damages that we have sustained, attributing much of the blame directly on the Morelia/Linares Mexican Organizers for making unsafe and improper safety arrangements in the known, high crime city of Patzcuaro, Mexico. I feel that this is a fair and proper request for the clear mishandling and improper security provided by the organizers of Mexican part of Morelia/Linares chess tournament. My father and I are extremely upset from this horrible incident, and have been clearly given no support at all over the past several days. I have given the Tournament Organizers ample time to consider my request delivering a letter on the 12th of February, and if necessary given them time to acquire an appropriate replacement as to not significantly disrupt this important tournament.
The Mexican Morelia/Linares Organizers have refused my request for fair compensation of incurred damages and I have been forced to withdraw from participating in this tournament due to the complete lack of any support and emotional reasons. I have provided them several options and time to come to a reasonable decision, but to no avail.
We appreciate the understanding and support of all the chess public, friends, and well wishers. I hope to continue my career and commence playing in the very near future.
Sincerely, Teimour Radjabov

The Cuban Championship took place through a number of phases 10th-31st January 2007. Firstly there was a Swiss where the top 6 qualified for the knockout phase where they were joined by Cuba's strongest players Lenier Dominguez and Lazaro Bruzon. Both duly reached the final and were tied 2-2 after the four game classical time rate final. Then the players drew two 25 minute games and a 5 minute game before Bruzon won the final blitz game to take the title for a 3rd time. I believe the remaining players played off for the minor placings at the same time in a six player all-play-all but I don't have confirmation of that, all the results have been derived from the games with some confirmed details from various press reports. Dates may not be exact but the start and finish dates seem right. My thanks to Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr for the games and then his help in trying to make sense of the material.

The ACP (http://www.chess-players.org/eng/index.html) have produced a press release 19th Feb 2007 on the recent cheating allegations.
Press release of the ACP Board
In view of some recent events in the cheating controversy and several hasty comments from the press, the ACP Board has decided to clarify its position on the matter.
The ACP Board does not believe to have the power to establish a verdict based on the available evidences on whether certain players made use of illegal means to improve their playing strength and results. We find it wiser, however, to concentrate our energy on trying to find solutions to the problem of cheating in general.
The situation has become unpleasant, to say the least. Rumours can be very harmful. Recent allegations and articles published in the press create an unhealthy situation in the chess world. We are afraid that a tense atmosphere of reciprocal suspicion among chess players may install itself at future top-tournaments.
We consider it our duty to make everything possible to prevent such a scenario to happen. It would be wrong, however, to pretend that cheating in chess cannot exist, or that no one would ever cheat. Bearing in mind that progress in technology and electronics undoubtedly create more and more cheating opportunities, the problem is real. In our view, the solution involves creating tournament conditions which will not allow cheating altogether. Some important measures have to be taken. It seems obvious, however, that all steps will not be applicable to all kinds of tournaments. The more participants, the more difficult the chance to create perfect conditions.
The ACP Board has written a letter to FIDE in which a set of concrete measures have been proposed to prevent cheating opportunities. A similar letter will also be sent to organizers of the most famous tournaments.
Thus, we hope that temptation will no longer be possible, and that rumours will consequently disappear. The integrity of our chess elite is at stake. We expect a fruitful discussion to lead to important decisions in this matter.
