A lot of chess to enjoy this week. Vladimir Akopian took clear first place at the GibTelecom Open after winning his final round game. The Bundesliga was also strong this weekend. The Topalov cheating allegations grind on with, amongst others, articles in the Guardian by Leonard Barden: http://sport.guardian.co.uk/chess/story/0,,2001010,00.html and an intervention by Nigel Short http://sport.guardian.co.uk/chess/story/0,,2003094,00.html. I haven't yet come to a firm view on the allegations. On the one hand they won't go away and come from some normally level headed sources. On the other I'm particularly puzzled by the idea that this cheating is supposed to be obvious if you see it, and to have been going on for at least two and a half years. Yet in this period we haven't seen a protest during play at the point it was supposed to be happening (which is exactly the moment it has to be brought up and dealt with), or monitoring of Danailov by seconds or helpers of those convinced that he was definitely cheating. In addition the recent articles really don't add to what was widely known, a number of top players think Topalov is cheating, no actual evidence has emerged although its claimed (not least in the Barden story) that film does exist of Danailov appearing to signal. For all these reasons I'm still sceptical that Topalov is receiving advice during play without being able to dismiss the allegations either, but then again as in the case of Topalov's accusations against Kramnik its up to the accusers to come up with evidence to justify what they're saying and I'm not seeing a whole lot of it. One thing is certain, this is exceptionally damaging to the professional game and a resolution needs to come very soon.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The 4th weekend of the German Bundesliga took place 3rd-4th February 2007 with the 2nd seeing the final round 7 games completed too so that all the teams have played the same number of matches.
Rainer Polzin reports: In Berlin very strong grandmasters played a lot of nice games. David Navara's result was incredible: In November he loses two games in the Bundesliga in Berlin (against Rabiega and Socko), this weekend he loses three games in a row: Against Miroshnichenko, Rustemov and Nikolic. The best combination of the weekend was played by Aronian against McShane, really great. Porz made only one point this weekend against Mühlheim and they lost against Katernberg. Baden-Baden (beating the strong team Tegernsee) is clear first. I think nobody will stop them. It seems that in 2007-2008 the 1. Bundesliga will be organised by the "Schachbundesliga e.V.". Alle Clubs from 1. Bundesliga and the German Chessfederation are members of the club.
