My thanks to Sinisa Joksic, Andoni Madariaga, Jan Mazuch, Laurence Ball, Ian Rogers, Valery Maes, Gerald Schendel, Laszlo Nagy, Gaguik Oganessian, Gert Ligterink, Adolivio Capece, Christophe Philippe, George Mirijanian, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Kenneth Sinha, Peter Doggers, Frits Agterdenbos and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The Wijk aan Zee tournament has seen eight of the thirteen rounds take place. Top seed Veselin Topalov leads by half a point on 6/8 beating Viswanathan Anand who he shared first with last year in round 8. There are five other players within a point of the lead so the event is potentially heading for an exciting finish. I'm enjoying the event and covering the event from the venue.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Nigel Short and Anatoly Karpov made headlines on the 11th of January when they captained a match with ice pieces, Short was in London and Karpov in Moscow at the Russian Winter Festival with a number of juniors making most of the most. The game was agreed drawn in a winning position for team Karpov but with the clock very much against him. Nigel Short's contribution to the London team and Karpov's contribution to the Moscow team, if anything at all, was negligible (we had basically agreed the previous day to keep out of it). There dual roles were of captains and commentators. The moves were largely made by the two eight year olds, Darius Parvizi-Wayne and Konstantin Savenkov, with perhaps a few tips from bystanders. Nevertheless, it was very entertaining game. London would beyond doubt have won on time, had they continued, but it seemed a trifle unpsorting, and by no means in the spirit of the Russian Winter Festival, to flag them from a lost position when they (London) were controlling the clock:-)

The Petrovskaya Ladya Chess Festival took place in Peterhof, Russia 3rd-11th January 2007. Daniil Lintchevski and Denis Yevseev couldn't even be separated by tie-break in sharing first on 7/9 in the GM group. There were a couple of naming errors in the open section games so I give them again.

This week's guest on "Chess and Books with Fred Wilson" on Tuesday, January 16th, 2007, will again be the award winning and internationally acclaimed author and teacher IM John Watson. John, one our most profound theoretical thinkers, has chronicled the evolution of modern chess strategy in two fascinating books, "Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy. Advances Since Nimzowitsch" (Gambit, 1998), winner of both the USCF & BCF 1999 "Book of the Year" awards (!), and its superb sequel, "Chess Strategy in Action" (Gambit, 2003). John will discuss his magnificent new work, "Mastering the Chess Openings. Volume 1" (Gambit, 2006. 335pp., $29.95), which concentrates on double King Pawn & the major"semi-open" defenses to 1. e4. Fred Wilson's show runs from 8:00 to 10:00 PM (EST) every Tuesday evening. As always, there will be replays of the show almost immediately afterwards for our chess enthusiasts on the West Coast & elsewhere, and often there will be several replays the following day. You can access it at the following website: http://www.chess.fm, but only if you are an ICC member. However, if you visit chessclub.com you can sign up for a one week free trial membership, listen to the show that week, and access the other good stuff on Chess.fm while you're at it!
