My thanks to John Henderson, Laszlo Nagy, Nebojsa Baralic, Michael Atkins, Arthur Brameld, Thomas Henrich, Goran Mufic, Nicolaas Groot, Anatoly Lisenko, Igor Glek, Bognár Csaba, Zenon Franco, Mauro Petrolo, Antonio Castello, Jonathan Berry, Jan Mazuch, Philipp Schlosser, Hugo Fernandez, Otto Buchholz, Jeroen van den Berg, Christoph Pfrommer, Rolf Behovits, Philip Feeley and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The main event of the week is the Kramnik - Fritz match in Bonne. Man - Machine matches are hardly my scene but you can hardly deny their publicity value for the game. How long they'll continue before computing power effectively rules humans out of making a decent fist of them is open to question. The problem is not that humans play inherently weaker chess its that they produce single errors that ruin well played games. Because players realise this they get tense and probably make worse errors. All of which may go a tiny way to explain why Kramnik became the latest in a long line of players playing just inexplicable blunders in matches of this kind. Vassily Ivanchuk leads at the half way stage of the traditional Capablanca Memorial in Havana with 4/6 in spite of losing a game to second placed Kamil Miton.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Vladimir Kramnik plays the ChessBase computer program Deep Fritz in a 6 game match 25th November - 5th December 2006 in the Germans Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonne. Kramnik stands to win a prize of $1 Million US for a win in the match doubling his starting fee.
Kramnik has sight of the opening book of Fritz until it leaves it. Kramnik seems to have missed a winning chance with 30.e3! In the second game he played bravely and was probably better before committing a real howler allowing mate in one. According to the chessbase website "Kramnik played the move 34...Qe3 calmly, stood up, picked up his cup and was about to leave the stage to go to his rest room. At least one audio commentator also noticed nothing, while Fritz operator Mathias Feist kept glancing from the board to the screen and back, hardly able to believe that he had input the correct move. Fritz was displaying mate in one, and when Mathias executed it on the board Kramnik briefly grasped his forehead, took a seat to sign the score sheet and left for the press conference, which he dutifully attended."

There were two RGSU tournaments in Moscow 6th-14th November 2006. Nikolay Konovalov won the GM event and Armen Tonoian won the masters event with 9/12. Olga Girya's score in the masters official table seems to have been miscalculated. Games from rounds 9-13 are missing in spite of the event having been finished for some time.

The final for the IV Russian Cup for Women took place 8th-19th November 2006. The website says something about the Moscow region which I'm hopeful doesn't refer to the event being a regional final as the players seem to be from all over the country and I'm taking the event to have taken place in Moscow in the absence of any clarification on the website below. The event was won by Zoja Severiukhina with 8.5/11.

The Bundesliga chess season in Germany is under way. The second double round took place 18th-19th November 2006. The Tal Memorial Blitz caused a lot of strong players to miss the event. Alexei Shirov decided to miss the blitz and his 2/2 would have been much appreciated by his team OSC Baden Baden. Nevertheless they were missing Anand and they lost a key match to rivals SG Köln Porz. The first of the extra round 7 games were played on Friday so some teams have played 5 games and others 4 but all teams have dropped points now.
One correction to the games given last week but there may be more from Porz I gather.
