1) Introduction

My thanks to David Llada, Lou Caruana, Philipp Schlosser, Fred Hamperl, George Mirijanian, Diego, Zenón Franco Ocampos, Chris Bird, Thomas Henrich, Peter Doggers, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Zenón Franco Ocampos, Chris Ross, Andy McFarland, David Ayza, Yannick Pelletier, Fred Lucas, Joëlle Mourgues, Kristianus Liem, Miklos Orso, Pedro Alberdi, Michael Rahal, Zeljka Malobabic, Holger Lieske, Lennarth Eriksson, Maurice Ouvrier, Jakub Fuksik, Marcelo Alves, Ching Kim Lye, Varlam Vepkhvishvili and everyone else who helped with the issue.

After the excitement of last week we're back to more normal chess this week. There is a nice event in Barcelona with Vassily Ivanchuk as top seed. But the main event is the Essent Chess tournament in Hoogeveen which sees Topalov return to chess almost immediately after his match with Kramnik. Topalov started with two blacks and two losses. Its not necessarily a bad thing to get straight back on the horse after losing a match but I guess he must be terribly tired. I seem to remember that after his hammering by Karpov in 1982 Korchnoi flew straight out and played a tournament. If you leave it I suppose you can only brood.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

8) XI Blind Individual World Chess Championship

The All India Chess Fedederation for the Blind organised the XI individual world chess championship for the blind in Goa 8th-19th October 2006 at the Radisson white sands hotel. The event is held every 4 years. Vladimir Berlinsky won the title for the first time after he beat his rival, former champion and friend Sergey Krylov in the final round to take the title with 7.5/9. The silver medal on tie-break was taken by Cuban Carlos Larduet Despaigne. Lubov Zsiltzova Lisenko took the bronze medal she beat compatriot Sergej Wassin. Sadly the decisive game won by Berlinsky is missing from the official site along with a number of the top games from the final round, hopefully it will turn up as it was described in detail in the bulletin. My thanks to Chris Ross for his help.

22) Mexico City Chess Festival

There was a huge chess festival in Mexico City 19th-22nd October 2006.

The events included Guinness World Records for:

maximum number of games played in simuls on one day (13.446)

"the biggest human logo" or "human drawing" (as the participants in the simul games were forming kind of a giant chess board when seen from above), but actually that one is still to be checked and confirmed by the Guinness commisioners.

Karpov also went for a Guinness Record himself: he signed 1951 copies of the book "Karpov, el camino de una voluntad" (written by the undersigned), getting the record of "most books autographed by a celebrity". The previous holder of this record was Bill Cullen, who in April 2005 signed 1848 copies of his book "Golden Apples". Karpov wanted to stop when he reached the number of 1951 book, first because he was already very tired (his hand was in pain), and secondly because that was the year he was born.

"Signing book for 6 hours was much more tiring than playing a long chess game, because here I had to be seating all the time, I couldn´t walk or relax at all", he told me right after reaching his goal.

Stuart Claxton was the representative for the Guinness World Records in México.

There was a rapid tournament: Mexico Invitational 2006: 1. GM Karjakin, Sergei 4/6 2-3. GM Korchnoi, Viktor and GM Kosteniuk, Alexandra 3 4. GM Hernandez, Gilberto 2

Hopefully games from the above event will become available.

23) ACP Rapid Cup in Odessa

The Association of Chess Professionals http://www.chess-players.org/eng/index.html have announced their first major event. The 1st ACP World Rapid Cup is set to take place in Odessa in the Ukraine 4th-8th January 2007. The event will be sponsored by the Bank Pivdennyi based in Odessa. The venue will be the Hotel Londonskaya. The tournament organisers are the Bank Pivdennyi and the Association of Chess Professionals. The total prize fund will amount to 136,000 US Dollars. 16 grandmasters will participate in this Knock-Out tournament. The time control will be 20 minutes for the whole game with an increment of 5 seconds per move.

Invitations and contracts will be sent to the players who finished among the best eight of the 1st ACP Tour (2004/05) and the 2nd ACP-Tour (2005/06). The ACP Tour is a yearly ranking system which includes most of the strongest chess events in the world.

Thus, following players will be officially invited: Vladimir Kramnik (world champion, Russia), Viswanathan Anand (world champion in rapid chess, India), Alexander Morozevich (Russia), Levon Aronian (winner of the 2005 World Cup and Olympic Champion, Armenia), Peter Leko (Hungary), Boris Gelfand (Israel), Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan), Alexei Shirov (Spain), Sergey Rublevsky (Russia), Evgeny Bareev (Russia), Arkadij Naiditsch (Germany), Penteala Harikrishna (India), Ivan Sokolov (The Netherlands), Viorel Bologan (Moldova).

All these 14 players belong to the elite of modern chess, while 6 of them are currently ranked in the Top Ten of the rating list. They are also members of the Association of Chess Professionals. As Viswanathan Anand and Viorel Bologan finished in the top eight of both ACP Tours, two places in the First ACP World Rapid Cup remain vacant. The Bank Pivdennyi and the ACP will soon decide in common to whom they will award these “Wild Cards”.

24) French Chess Federation Press Release

French Chess Federation Press Release 20th October 2006

The French Chess Federation has followed with great interest, but also with a strong feeling of disapproval, the events which have taken place in Elista (Russia), during the World Championship Unification match between Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov. Even if it is clear that the first complaint made by Veselin Topalov was obviously outrageous and groundless, it should never have spoilt the course of the match as it ultimately did, leaving it on the border of a dead end.

By the way, we want to stress that the disaster could be avoided only because Vladimir Kramnik took upon himself to come back to the board with a forfeited white game against him, a gesture full of sportsmanship for which the chess world should be extremely grateful. A competent and professional Appeal's Committee, accepted by both players beforehand, would have succeeded in defusing the bomb, instead of exploding it. Furthermore, it is not acceptable to have such a Committee composed of FIDE officials, whose job is primarily to work on the development of chess.

There's no need to go into further details of the incidents which have scattered the World Championship match Kramnik-Topalov, as they are already well known by chess enthusiasts, but also, alas, by a larger audience. Chess didn't need such a bad publicity, and there are cases where no publicity at all is better than the "toilet garbage" we have witnessed.

We understand these unfortunate events in Elista as being symptomatic of FIDE malfunctioning. FIDE’s management has repeatedly proven, during these last years, its inability to organize top events properly. We have a long list of cancelled, aborted or distorted matches and tournaments, the latest example being the 8 Candidates matches of the current World Championship cycle, for which no organizers were found at the appropriate moment.

For instance, French top player Etienne Bacrot declined to play in tournaments to prepare for his Candidates match against Gata Kamsky, which was supposed to take place in September- October, and which has finally been postponed to "who knows when".

Now that we have, at least, an undisputed World Chess Champion -Vladimir Kramnik - one thing is crystal clear, and still more obvious than ever : something has to be done before the image of chess is definitely damaged.

Our President Kirsan Iljumzhinov must draw a conclusion from all these failures. The time has come to let professionals take care of top level chess...

Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance."
