The World Championship match between Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov enters its final week with the score balanced at 5-5. Topalov had the better week winning two on the bounce but Kramnik ended it the better with a win to level the score. This match will probably not be remembered for its chess (there is time) but for the off board battle plan of team Topalov seems to have come from the book of Viktor Baturinsky the notorious head of the Soviet delegation for Anatoly Karpov in his matches against Viktor Korchnoi. First there were complaints about Kramnik's bathroom habits which were a thinly disguised accusation of computer cheating against Kramnik. Then there were the statistics produced to show how often Kramnik agreed with Fritz in his choice of moves, which didn't even bother with the disguise. Then things went silent as Topalov started to win. One wonders what may come next, accusations of taking drugs if a fan site for Topalov is anything to go by. We've not had a truly bitter relationship at the top between rivals for a while, Spassky and Korchnoi didn't speak for years after their match, Korchnoi and Karpov were barely on speaking terms after two, Kasparov had his critics but we haven't had a real bile filled relationship for a long while. Its hard to see Topalov and Kramnik being on each other's Christmas card list for a long time. I hope for a cleanish finish (legal action is an obvious possibility) and that it doesn't go down to a single armageddon game with white having 6 minutes and black 5 minutes but with white having to win but it could happen (if you want to brush up on your match regulations they're at: http://www.fide.com/news.asp?id=1081).
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov play their 12 game world championship reunification match in Elista, 23rd Sept - 10th Oct 2006. Play starts at 12pm BST on game days. Dates: Open Ceremony 21st September 2006, 7.00 p.m. Play on: 23rd, 24th, 26th, 27th, 29th, September, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 11th and 13th (tie-breaks) October 2006. Closing ceremony 13th October 2006.
We left the match with Vladimir Kramnik leading 3.5-2.5 after six games.
Game seven saw Topalov have his third white in a row of played games due to the unusal regulation that the players switch the order they played white after the rest day and due to the default. Topalov seemed to be pressing out of the opening but as pieces were traded off Kramnik emerged with an extra pawn. Topalov, although not in trouble had to be careful and he steered the game to a draw in 60 moves.
Game eight finally saw Kramnik get the white pieces and he got hit by a tremendous novelty. Kramnik had to give up two knights for a rook and pawn. Initially he seemed fine but the difficulty was if Topalov ever did unwind he would be in trouble. By move 30 black had unravelled his position and Kramnik was driven back and after 37.f3? was definitely losing. He accelerated the loss by 41.Kxg3 and was defeated in short order afterwards.
Game nine saw Topalov as white and level for the first time since the start of the match. Kramnik chose a supposedly solid variation of the Slav but was hit by the biggest novelty of the match. 9.g3 followed by 10.f4 was a completely new plan that came from his second Francisco Vallejo and it seemed to have a depressive effect on Kramnik. 12... b5?!, 15.. Qb6? and 16... e5? were all errors and the game was effectively over. Kramnik claimed he felt like resigning and his play in the rest of the game suggested that. After the game he expressed his annoyance at how he had been out prepared throughout the match. Topalov took the lead for the first time.
Game ten was starting to look like make or break for Kramnik. He played the Catalan as in games one and three and once again Topalov was the one to lead the game down a side line. Kramnik however is very comfortable in these positions and his 12.cxd5 and 13.e4! was new. Kramnik obtained a nice initiative and penetrated with one of his rooks to the 7th rank. The position was certainly not losing for Topalov before he played the really bad 24... f6? This move was just losing. Kramnik duly emerged two pawns up with a much better position and then proceeded to convert as securely as possible. This leaves the match delecately poised at 5-5 going into the final week.

The Galway Chess Congress 2006 took place September 29th - October 1st 2006. The 70 year jubilee tournament of OBRO Chessclub Copenhagen takes place October 14th-22nd 2006. They could use two foreigners more (preferably 2300+ and chasing an IM norm) entering a 9 round modified Swiss tournament with so far 29 participants, headed by GM Varga (H), IM Antoniewski (PL), IM Vajda (H), IM Glud (DK) and IM Hermansson (S).
Private lodgings will be found for the players and they will not have to pay an entry fee. Transportation and food will be the problem of the participant(s).
This should be a very good offer to youngsters chasing IM norm possibilities. A tournament served on a plate with free lodging in expensive Copenhagen.
The participant list will be maintained at this link: http://www.oebroskak.dk/aktiviteter/aktiv_beskriv.asp?id=160
Any questions for potential participants should be addressed to Soren Bech Hansen at: sorenbh@post10.tele.dk

Vladimir Kramnik will play the ChessBase computer program Deep Fritz in a 6 game match 25th November - 5th December 2006 in the Germans Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonne. Kramnik stands to win a prize of $1 Million US for a win in the match doubling his starting fee.
Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance."
The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
Schedule: Game 1: Saturday 25.11.2006 16h Game 2: Monday 27.11.2006 16h Game 3: Wednesday 29.11.2006 16h Game 4: Friday 01.12.2006 16h Game 5: Sunday 03.12.2006 16h Game 6: Tuesday 05.12.2006 16h
During the entire period of the match the Art and Exhibition Hall will offer a varied program.
