My thanks to John Saunders, Malcolm Pein, Thomas Pfaffel, Boris Gelfand, Stephen Connor, Ole Valaker, Yochanan Afek and everyone else who helped with the issue.
There has been a very wild start to the World Championship reunification match between Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov. Kramnik has emerged with a 2-0 lead when it could and perhaps should be 1.5-0.5 to Topalov or at least 1-1 instead. It may very well be that Kramnik's experience of two world title matches playing and one as a second will be the decisive edge in this contest. Already however its clear its a pity we're not in for an old fashioned 24 game match. The reason the longer matches fell out of favour was due to the unpredictability of their duration, potential for dullness, or as mis-matches. However when they do work (as they have many times) there are few greater long term thrills. Nevertheless lets be grateful for what we have and hope that Topalov's efforts haven't already been fatally wounded so we can see a full and exciting contest. TWIC has daily coverage of the event including during play updates.
The next cycle is up in the air with FIDE's latest proposal to scrap the candidates matches and go for a candidates tournament instead. This has upset Boris Gelfand who has been preparing for the matches for some time as he makes clear in his letter below. I have a lot of sympathy, I've long said that cycles need to be stable and predictable so that players can prepare properly and produce the best level of chess they can. As I said above I like matches and if we can get them back that would be fine by me. But as careful readers of TWIC may remember I've also long advocated a big swiss interzonal, a candidates tournament and then a match tournament (four players with 6 or 8 cycles). I'm fully aware this is a compromise fraught with problems but its a far better solution to chess' problems than a knockout. The main reason I advocate it is that it produces three pretty attractive events for sponsors and reduces calendar problems. The trouble with candidates match series as we saw before they were stopped is that getting sponsorship for each round proved harder and harder especially for the unattractive matches and the crowded calendar really can't accommodate a lengthy series of matches, especially if they have to wait for sponsors and the money isn't that good. So it doesn't surprise me that the candidates match series is to be cancelled, I really wondered how they would get it together, but it really does make life hard and unfair for a conscientious player like Gelfand who, in another time would probably have been like Portisch, a perennial and tough competitor in almost every candidates series.
TWIC is changing. There is a new format coming which we're testing at the moment and which I'm trying to also keep up to date. You can see it at: http://twic.chesscorp.com/infoglueDeliverLive/
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov play their 12 game world championship reunification match in Elista, 23rd Sept - 10th Oct 2006. Play starts at 12pm BST on game days. Dates: Open Ceremony 21st September 2006, 7.00 p.m. Play on: 23rd, 24th, 26th, 27th, 29th, 30th September, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th (tie-breaks) October 2006. Closing ceremony 13th October 2006.
Game one saw Vladimir Kramnik choose the Catalan against Veselin Topalov in game one. They both played down the game Moiseenko - Grischuk in the Russian Team Championship in Sochi this year. Kramnik seemed to be pressing for some time but when he won Topalov's a-pawn it seemed at the expense of allowing Topalov a repetition. Topalov realised even though he was a pawn down he could continue. He pressed for some time but was always in danger if he let Kramnik out of his bind. When Kramnik did escape Topalov missed a last chance to hold the position and instead blundered his whole position away and lost. A dynamic and interesting start.
Game two saw Topalov choose 1.d4 too (I'm enjoying this, I've got rather fed up of most of the elite clashes starting with 1.e4) was another huge heavy weight battle somewhat scarred with errors however. Kramnik defended with a Slav Defence and after he played 17. ...f5 it became a battle of the wings with black playing on the kind side and white trying to attack the king. On move 31. Kramnik blundered allowing mate in short order but Topalov didn't examine the position carefully and immediately played Qg6+ rather than the crushing Rxg4+. He explained later that he thought he was winning with Qg6+. Topalov gradually lost his advantage and probably his objectivity and he had a very difficult position at first time control. He missed some chances to draw and went down to a second loss.
So Kramnik leads 2-0 after two games but that scoreline doesn't explain at all how exciting these games have been and Topalov could very easily be leading 1.5-0.5 with some very normal decisions. Hopefully the players will continue to go at each other for the rest of the match. I include some very nice notes to the first two games from IM Malcolm Pein in the PGN section.
I'm enjoying the official site (http://www.worldchess2006.com/), live PGN (with basic commentary) during the games on a website that seems not to crash and very worthwhile reporting of the post game press conferences from the players is more than enough to satisfy me and I recommend you give it a visit.
Each player will receive 500,000 USD net from FIDE and in addition certain revenues from possible commercial sponsorships. The winner goes to the WCC tournament 2007, the loser has to wait for the next cycle. The games will be played under classical time control (120 minutes for the first 40 moves, 60 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game plus an additional 30 seconds per move starting from move 61). Possible Tiebreak: 4 games of rapid chess (25min+10sec), then 2 blitz games (5min+10sec), then sudden death (6min/5min) with white to win.

Magnus Carlsen defeated Simen Agdestein 3-1 in the Norwegian Championship playoff. After both standard time rate games were drawn, Carlsen won both rapid playoff games to take the title. This is the second year in a row they've had a play off. The match took place 19th-21st September 2006. This is Carlsen's first Norwegian title, Simen Agdestein is a seven time former champion. The playoff became necessary after they tied on 7/9 in the championship tournament in Moss 8th-15th July 2006.
Quotes:

The first weekend of the 4NCL took place in Sunningdale, England 16th-17th September 2006. Defending champions Wood Green lost both their opening matches after losing their sponsorship. Favourites this year look like being Guildford ADC with a challenge from Hilsmark Kingfisher and Slough Sharks. [See http://www.4ncl.co.uk/giddins01.htm and http://www.4ncl.co.uk/giddins02.htm for Steve Giddins' rounds 1-2 reports.]. Round 2 games now available.
John Saunders had the following queries with the round 2 games. Cherniaev-James, Rd 2: On move 20 Black can just play 20...Rf8 winning instantly and Hebden-J.Cobb, Rd 2: 31 Qg4 (followed by resigns) makes absolutely no sense, but 21 Bd3 does make sense. However these do indeed seem to be correct reflections of the original scoresheets.

The First Saturday tournaments for September took place 2nd-12th September 2006. IM Denes Boros won the GM event with 10/12. There were a couple of corrections I made in TWIC 619 within a few hours of its publication from Christian Richter which affected the IMB event table and games section. In the game Richter-Feige (round 6) the draw was agreed after 44.Bb3 (this move is missing). In the game Richter-Lengyel (round 8) until move 80 everything is correct, but the next moves were 81.Bb5 Nf7 82.Be8 Ne5 83.f3 Nd3+ 84.Kg3 Ne5 85.f4 Nd3 86.f5 and black resigned. So the result is 1-0 and not 0-1. So if you have early versions of the magazine you may want to redownload it or correct TWIC yourself.

To FIDE president, Mr.Kirsan Ilyumzhinov
Dear Mr. Ilyumzhinov,
Around a year ago FIDE adopted a new system of World Championship. In order to fight for the highest title in the Chess world, last December I went to the World cup tournament in Khanti-Mansiisk ,took 6th place and qualified for the next stage the Candidates matches. In December I signed a letter of intent with FIDE. In January 2006 FIDE made the pairings and announced that the matches would take place 20-30th of October with a minimal prize fund of 40000 US for each match. It meant that for 2 rounds of Candidate matches(8 of 1st round and 4 of next round) prize find should be at least 480000 US. Taking this into account, I planned the timetable of my preparation.
In order to reach the peak of my form for the most prestigious event of the year, I accepted some invitations like a training match with Czech grandmaster David Navara to have an experience in matches. However I declined some other ones, for example, super tournament in Foros with big prize-fund. If Id accepted this invitation, I would be rated 3rd in the tournament and would have good reasons to get at least 3rd prize-10000US. I also rejected an invitation for a rapid event in Cap dAdge at the end of October. I would be rated 1st there and would have a good chance to win 1st prize of 16000 Euro, as I did there already 2 times.
I also hired some players specially to analyze the games of my opponent Rustam Kasimdzhanov and my potential opponents - Gata Kamsky and Etienne Bacrot. In order to help me, my seconds also refused some invitations to the tournaments and I had to compensate financially their expected losses.
During this, I didnt receive no e-mail or any news from FIDE (which is strange by itself) starting from new year, I was confident that matches would start on time. Last month you confirmed it and assured "that the issue will be finalized during the Presidential Board meeting in Elista, during the Topalov- Kramnik match (I quote from the translation of your interview to Yuri Vasiliev from the Chessbase.com site on 21st of August 2006).
However, yesterday evening in official report of Presidential Board meeting I read the following:
"In order to resolve difficulties in the organization of the Candidate matches, the Board offered a round-robin tournament for the 16 players as an alternative to the original form of the competition. President Ilyumzhinov offered to hold all the matches or the tournament in Elista.
Of course the chess players are grateful to you for your kind offer to hold such an important event. But unfortunately, dates announced back in January should not be changed, especially not less than a month before the event. But especially harmful is the idea of replacing matches with a tournament. I never heard that in any sport that the structure of the World championship may be changed during the cycle.
I also never hear that in any sport dates of world championship in any stage were moved in such a short notice. It is especially dangerous to break all the rules of sport world when chess is trying so hard to become part of Olympic games .
In case the dates of the matches would be moved from officially stated, or if the matches will be cancelled altogether I would expect FIDE to compensate me for my damaged, as detailed above.
I am kindly requesting you to reply to my concerns urgently, as announced dates of the matches are within less than 1 month.
I consider the questions raised in this letter are of importance to all chess community, and therefore I send a copy of it to some of the most popular sites.
Sincerely yours, Boris Gelfand, candidate for the World Championship Rishon le Zion, Israel

Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance."
