1) Introduction
-------------

My thanks to Margeir Petursson, Norbert Friedrich, Joerg Harm,
and Claudio Antonio Tonegutti. I hope I haven't left anyone
out. Pretty much on the deadline. Groningen with Karpov and
Kamsky starts next week. Also Hastings with a strongish
lineup.

There will be a TWIC next week, hopefully not compiled against
such a tight deadline.

Enjoy Mark

2) News from Iceland
-----------------

Icelandic Championships playoffs
---------------------------------

There is a playoff between Hannes Stefansson
and Johannes Hjartarsson for the Icelandic
Championships. In a best of 4 games match
Stefansson is one up after 2 games.

Check out http://www.vks.is/skak/indexe.html
for news of this, notes by Margeir Petursson
and the Gudmundur Arason International below.

I will cover the final results and notes in
more detail next week.

3) Kasparov plays the INTEL Pentium processor in London
-----------------------------------------------

Kasparov beat Fritz 4 on an INTEL Pentium processor
in London 1.5 to 0.5 in a two game challenge match.

In the first game which Kasparov won the operater
sent the move 7. ...Bb7 instead of Kasparov's
chosen 7. ... Ba6. The computer made its moves
on that assumption until move 11. when the error
was discovered. As this isn't proper chess I would
have thought that the correct decision would have
been to go back to move 7 and start again.

However the hype is so powerful around these essentially
meaningless events (Keene discribing it as a Man Machine
World Championships) perhaps winning is everything.

The solution is not to play such events.

4) German Championships
-----------------------------

Norbert Friedrich sends me a report of the German Championships.
There are Interzonal places at stake and so there was a
playoff. FM Arno Zude seems to have scored a very sound
GM Norm!

I didn't have chance to find it. (a labourious process to say
the least)

-------------------------------------------------------
GUARAPUAVA (BRAZIL) 1995 Claudio Antonio Tonegutti

The final standings of the World Championships under 16 and under 18
Boys/Girls of 1995, held in Guarapuava - Brazil, from November 30 to
December 12 by FIDE and Brazilian Chess Federation were the following :
(These are the official tables. My unofficial tables, although in
correct scoring order aren't in tiebreak order, but do give the full
results.

Having processed the games into tables to check them I must say they
contain very few mistakes and the editor deserves great congratulation
on a job well done.

My thanks to Claudio Antonio Tonegutti for sending the information.

I have reprocessed the entire file and removed the games from TWIC61
to a complete file for TWIC 62.

7) Michael Niermann's Chess Tournament Calendar
--------------------------------------------

This calendar appears in Mark Crowther's The Week In Chess. At the end
you'll find detailled informations on some of the tournaments listed in the
chronological calendar. Many thanks to all who have sent us some tournament
informations, but we still need some help. If you want to support us, please
send infos about tournaments in your country to niermann@math.uni-dortmund.de.
Comments are also welcome (e.g. wrong links in the calendar).

To the organizers of tournaments: It would be much easier for me, if you could
send me in addition to the announcement a short description in the format
below. If you give an email, ftp, telnet or WWW address, it would also be nice
to include a link in HTML format, if you are able to do so.
